Challenge

Project 2

Below I have provided 3 files as a submission for this challenge:

  1. Jupyter notebook file
  2. Python code for the corresponding process
  3. Output in the form of picture.

Q3. Justification for the filter quality:

#################################################

Output of "Laplacian-Filter" is more refined as compared to that of "Prewitt-Filters" output.

This is because in Prewitt-Filter which is a 1st order filter i.e. it involves taking 1st-order derivatives of the image as function. Sudden spikes are obtained on encountering an edge. But we obtain thick edges in the output.

"Laplacian filter" involves taking 2nd order derivative of the image as function. We obtain finer edges, more features/details are captured and detected(and more sharpness is obtained as a result).

However "Laplacian Filter" if applied directly can also lead to the amplification of any type of noise present in the image.

Thus it is advised to remove any noise before feature extraction is performed using either of the above filters/masks.

("Laplacian" will be preferred over "Prewitt" and "Sobel" operators)
