Project 1 - Review of Shear & Moment Connections in RAM Connection

Aim:

1) To Design and optimize typical shear, moment and Splice joints in RAM Connection for the following structure modelled in Staad Pro.

2) Design and optimize base plate connection.

Data:

1) Structure: A 2D portal frame fixed support spanning 15m with a pitched roof ridge height of 12m, slope of 4 degrees.

2) A uniformly distributed load of 10kN/m is applied on the roof beams.

SOLUTION:

All files having DXF view of connections, STAAD Pro Model, Connection Reports have been attached below.

Step 1: Structure was modeled in Staad Pro Using hot rolled sections

1) 3D Model:

2) Properties of the sections:

3) Specifications:

4) Supports:

5) Loading:

Step 2: Optimized the beams and columns for 85% utilization.

Design:

Step 3: Considered splice joints at 6m from base and 3m from beam column joints.

Step 4: Considered a hanger beam shear connected with column support of 4m height at 3m from beam-column corner joint carrying 5kN/m load.

Step 5: Designed and optimized all the connections.

Node 1: Base Plate Connection:

Node 10 and 11: Column Splices (Flange Plate Moment Connection):

Node 6: Beam Column Web side Plate Shear Connection:

Node 12: Beam Splice Moment Connection:

Node 5: Ridge Beam Splice Connection:

Node 4: Beam Column Moment Connection:

Node 2: Beam Column End Plate Connection:
