Project 1_Analyze and design a steel building to 10T CRANE as per IS standard code using TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER.

AIM: To analyze and design a steel building to 10T CRANE as per IS standard code using TEKLA STRUCTURAL DESIGNER.

PROCEDURE:

  • Initially open the Tekla Structural Designer software. Now click on New option to create a new model workspace. Using the Model Ribbon using the grid line and Quick parallel grid line option the vertical grids was drawn.

  • In the same way vertical grid lines are drawn. And as per the given spacing, draw the horizontal lines.

  • In the Model toolbar select Construction levels icon to open the construction levels dialogue box.

  • The construction level dialogue box appears and name each level like base, GF, 1st floor and Roof and heights are assigned to each level as shown

  • Now to add Pedestal columns in the Home menu click on Manage property sets options and the manage property sets dialogue box appears. Click on New followed by members and select concrete column. Rename the column as Pedestral Column 1 and Pedestral Column 2 and apply the properties as per requirement.
  • Now using the column option in the ribbon tab under the model menu columns was placed at locations as required. Columns was placed at base floor and till ground floor.

  • Similarly, add steel columns in a similar way as pedestal columns. Rename it as C1 with properties as per requirement.
  • Now using the column option in the ribbon tab under the model menu columns was placed at locations as required. Columns was placed at ground floor and till top roof.

  • Now using the beam option in the ribbon tab under the model menu beams was placed at locations as required.

  • Rafter beams was designed next. Click on Manage property sets options and the manage property sets dialogue box appears. Click on New followed by members and select Steel Beam. Rename the beam for our own convenience and apply the properties as required on the side
  • Now, create frames from model tab. Click on each Grid to create frames as shown.

Structure with beams, columns and rafter beams

  • To add bracing to the wall and roof
  • go to manage property sets > new> steel brace
  • select the section of the brace element
  • go to model >click on brace
  • then add bracing to the model

3D view

  • to add slab panels to the model
  • check whether the slab is one way or two way
  • then go to manage property sets>slabs
  • select the grade of the concrete and define the depth of the slab panel
  • then assign the slab panels to the model

LOAD CALCULATIONS

Given Data:

Consider dead, live, equipment and wind loading.

Consider the brick wall loading for 150mm thick and 1.5 KN per sq m for wall and roof cladding.

Assume wind loading basic speed as 39m/s

Calculation of Brick wall Load:

Assume the unit weight of the brick as 20 kn/m^3

Height of Brick Wall is 5m

Thickness of Brick Wall is 150mm (Given)

Load of Brick Wall for Ground Floor = 20 x 5 x 0.15 = 15 kN/m

Brick wall Load for 1st Floor beams = 20 x 7 x 0.15 = 21 kN/m

Calculation of Floor Finish:

Assume the thickness of floor finishes as 50mm.

Unit weight of floor finishes is assumed as 24 kN/m^3

Floor finishes load = 0.5 x 24 = 1.2 kN/m^2

Calculation of Imposed loads:

As per IS 875 (Part-2) based on occupancy, the imposed load are considered.

Calculation of Wind load:

As per IS 875 (Part-3)

Basic Wind Speed (Vb) is considered as 39m/s (Given)

Assuming design life of Structure as 50 yrs and Terrain category as 2

Design Wind Speed formula is

Assuming,

k1= 1 (as per 5.3.1)

k2= 1 (as per 5.3.2)

k3= 1 (for slope of structure greater than 3)

k4= 1.15 (as per 5.3.4)

So,

Design Wind Speed is Vz= 39 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1.15

Vz= 44.85 m/s

Design Wind Pressure Pz =0.6 x 44.85^2

Pz= 1206.9135 N/m2 = 1.2 kN/m

Total length of the structure is 90 m

Width of the structure is 38 m

Height of the structure is 26.52 m

Ratio of wall and roof co efficients

l/w = 90/38 = 2.36

h/w = 13.5/38 = 0.355

Crane Load Calculations:

Crane Capacity= 10T = 100 kN

Weight of the Crab = 35 kN

Weight of the crane = 160 kN

Maximum hook approach = 1 m

Wheel base = 3 m

distance between c/c gantry rails = 20 m

distance between c/c gantry columns = 6 m

max point load on the crane = 100 +35 = 135 kN

Crane loading is applied to the roof of the structure.

Assign the Loads to the model

Brickwall Loading (Dead Load) of 15 kN/m applied to Ground Floor

Brickwall Loading (Dead Load) of 21 kN/m applied to First Floor

Live/Imposed Load applied on Ground Floor

Live/Imposed Load applied on First Floor

For 18 degrees pitched metal roof, Imposed Load on the roof is 1.5 kN/m2

To assign wind loads

wind loads assigned on roof top

After assigning all the loads, validate the model and run the analysis. Before analysing the model, check the modifications of the first order linear analysis from the setting toolbar. Then go to analyisis toolbar and click on analyze

After the analysis is done we can view the failue criteria of the structure

RESULTS:

From the data and attachments. All loads are calculated and applied to the structure using Tekla Strucutral Designer. 1st order Analysis is done and errors are checked.

Hence the final Tekla file is attached.
