Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

TITLE:

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim:

This project shows that examine the given fender wheel arch design to verify if the wheel arch of the fender meets the European standards.

GIVEN:

CONSTRUCTION:

1.WHEEL ARCH:

*The wheel arch is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.

*The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.

*Corrosion had occurred around the splash plate at the back of the wheel arch.

2.FENDER:

*Fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it.

*Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels.

*It is the part of a car, truck or motorcycle that surrounds the wheel sell.

*The primary function of a fender is to prevent dirt and debris from being thrown into the air by the tire.

*The fender is located over the wheels of the vehicle.

TYPES:

  1. Full Fender
  2. Half Fender

FULL FENDER TYPE:

* Full fender type is traditional type of fender where more material consumption is observed. This type is used in old design of automobiles where it increases the overall weight and thus reduces performance. The maintenance also relatively more due to more surface.

HALF FENDER TYPE:

* Half fender type is modern design where less material consumption is observed, so productivity increases by reducing size of blank and thus providing more performance. The maintenance also relatively low compared to full bumper type.

3.MOUNTING:

There are 5 mounting points in a fender. They are

  • Body
  • A Pillar
  • Sill
  • Cowl
  • Drip

TYPES OF STANDARDS:

  1. Japanese Standard
  2. European Standard
  3. USA standard

European Standard:

*Measure clearance L at section SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE and prepare clearance check chart to validate.

*At all five sections the clearance value should be more Greater than 10mm to satisfythe european standards.

*Wheel guard reqirment: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5mm at a line 30degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the centeral vertical axis of axis of wheel.

Procedure:

STEP 1:

Create the fender surface for wheel arch study.

STEP 2:

Create sketch as per european standards and Project the sketch on the fender surface to get SA, SB, SC, SD, SE sections.

STEP 3:

Calculations of wheel Arch area

European Regulations:

* For calculation of clearance between wheel Arch and wheel we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel and the procedure as follows.

* From the given part file we need to open in the Catia V5 and from the part file they give the fender and the wheel. So, now we need to check for the European regulations standard.

* Now we need to create the Datum plane at the outer most face of the wheel as shown in figure.

* From the central line(SA) which passing through the wheel center, we have to create the SB line and SC line at the angle of 30* and 50* respectively from SA.

* And them from the line passing through the wheel center (Horizantal axis),we have to create the point of 150mm from it,that is said to be SE which lies on the wheel arch.

* After we have to create the intermediate central line which should be exactly lies between SE and SC and the point we create is said to be SD lies on the wheel arch projected on the datum created on the surface of the wheel.

* Create the datum plane on the fender wheel arch, and follow the same procedure to create the SB, SC, SD and SE. Calculate the distance between the points created on both the datum plane and check whether it maintains minimum clearance of 10mm with the respective points.

1.The clearance at the point SA

Ans:The value of clearance at SA is 9.949mm

2.The clearance at the point SB

Ans:The value of clearance at SB is 10mm

3.The clearance at the point SC

Ans:The value of clearance at SC is 0.114mm

4.The clearance at the point SD

Ans:The value of clearance at SD is 2.885mm

5.The clearance at the point SE

Ans:The value of clearance at SE is 5.997mm

6.The clearance at the point SB and SC value of " a"

Ans:The value of clearance at SB is 44.773mm

The value of clearance at SC is 38.36mm

Observation tabular form mentioned below:

*At all 5 sections the ‘L’ value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.

Position of "L" value Required Clearance Value (mm) Observed Clearance Value (mm) The requirement Test
SA 10 9.949 Failed
SB 10 10 Passed
SC 10 0.114 Failed
SD 10 2.885 Failed
SE 10 5.997 Failed

*Wheel guard requirement – The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5 mm at a line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

position of "a" value Required Clearance Value (mm) Observed Clearance value (mm) The requirement Test
SB 5 44.773 Passed
SC 5 38.36 Passed

Conclusion :

* By comparing the values obtained from the European standard value, It is observed and concluded that the fender model fails to meet the requirements at SA, SC, SD and SE locations. The model should be altered and corrected to meet the requirements.
