Conceptual design of a building with columns and shear walls
Ques:1
Restraint of Floor shrinkage
The stresses delveloped due to the tensile action which result in the formation of crack due to floor shrinkage. In this case the arrangement shown in (a) having column at the corners have a uniformity arrangement in which the shrinkage can be restricted where the crack formation can be less while compared with (b),(c). If the corners are with wall that is the L shaped wall then the formation of crack is more like (c). The flexural capacity at the base were the span and the arrangement have the flextural stiffness capacity.
Also the static eccentricity is caused by the tortional moments acting were this structure (c) have column at its end were the tortional moments are quiet less while combared with (a),(b)
The structural degradation without loosing the elements in the structures is the redandancy in this case the strcucture (a) could with stand than the structure (b),(c).
In the structure (c) the structure is laterally stiff than the structure of (b),(c) due to the eccentricity were the shear wall present.
Ques:2
Beams other than B3,B7 all other beams are connected to the column. This can be avoided if there is feasability. Tortional flexibility of structures is there in the structure. Alternatively if the area of center of mass area to center of stiffness are is supported to column or a shear wall is added this tortisonal restaraint can be avoided.
Due to the eccentricity action the tortional and translation mode of vibration arises
In this case the fundamental translational modes of vibration is larger than the fundamental torsional mode of vibration
Ques:3
In the given structure the the building is in irregular pattern. Sqauare or rectangular shape of structures are mostley advisable for the resistance of lateral; forces such as seismic behaviour.
Also in this case partitian walls and beams are also said to be placed in the structures in different stories, also the position of the column are also not is a grid pattern or in uniformity so the eccentricity and the center of mass would not be perfect which will lead to tortional behaviour of the structure.
Proposals made and justified for the choice of the lateral-load-resisting system and its foundation are:
In this case first the ground condition would be perfect were the base bearing capacity should be perfect.
Infill of the structure should be good in condition were there should not be any soft story failure condition.
Shear wall resisting the lateral laod to be placed were the tortion behaviour could be avoided.
Since the column in not in a uniformity manner the beam postion and the connection to be proper were corbel colud be added to avoid the beam column joint failure.
Pile with Raft foundation could be advisable since the whole area are well packed.
