Comparison of bending in beams
Aim:To perform the comparison of bending in beams.
Introduction:In applied mechanics, bending (also known as flexure) characterizes the behavior of a slender structural element subjected to an external load applied perpendicularly to a longitudinal axis of the element.A beam deforms and stresses develop inside it when a transverse load is applied on it. In the quasi-static case, the amount of bending deflection and the stresses that develop are assumed not to change over time. In a horizontal beam supported at the ends and loaded downwards in the middle, the material at the over-side of the beam is compressed while the material at the underside is stretched.
Problem Statement: In this we have analyze the bending behaviour of beams with different cross section area:
1.Rectangular Beam
2.I section Beam
3.C section Beam
Apply a load of 1500N on smaller face of each beam and compare the result of stress, displacement and strain.
Case-1: Rectangular Beam : Material=Alloy Steel
Dimensions:
Model:
Fixed part and load applied:Load of 1500N is applied at the top face of beam. And one end is fixed.
Meshed Part:Deafult Mesh is choosen.
Case 2: I secction Beam:Material=Alloy Steel
Dimensions:
Model:
Fixed part and load applied:Load of 1500N is applied at the top face and one end is fixed.
Meshed Part:Default mesh is choosen.
Case 3: C-section Beam: Material = Alloy Steel
Dimensions:
Model:
Fixed part and load applied: Load of 1500N is applied at 45mm face of beam. And one end is fixed.
Meshed Part:Default mesh is choosen.
Result:For case 1:
For case 2:
For case 3:
Tabulated Data:
| Serial No. | Beams | Von mises stress(N/m^2) | Displacement(mm) | Strain |
| 1. | Rectangular | 7.5326e+06 | 3.102e-02 | 2.576e-05 |
| 2. | I section | 2.663e+07 | 1.181e-01 | 1.020e-04 |
| 3. | C section | 4.497e+07 | 3.737e-01 | 1.529e-04 |
Conclusion:According to the data max stress develops in c section beam. But the stress distribution is more uniform in I section. So the best one is I section beam.
