Challenge 2- Comparing the performance of three types of beams under bending load.
Week 2
Comparing the performance of three types of beams under bending load.
Introduction:
Detail analysis of bending load on three types of beams (rectangular beam, I section, and C section beam) having the same material and loading conditions. In this problem, three types of beams are taken having the same materials (Alloy steel SS) and magnitude of force (1500N). The experiment is done one by one and the comparison of stress, strain, and displacement will be done using the simulation tool SolidWorks.
The basic steps for doing this project are as follows:
1. First make a sketch of the beam using the sketch tool with the proper dimensions.
Extrude the sketch up to 400mm using extrude boss/base. Now beam is ready for simulation.
2. Now use the simulation command and set all required data are as follows:-
Go to the simulation tab< new>
Add materials here Alloy steel SS is taken.
Alloy steel SS properties vary depending on the specific grade of stainless steel. However, some of the common properties of alloy steel SS include:
- Corrosion resistance: Alloy steel SS is resistant to corrosion in a wide range of environments, including atmospheric exposure, acids, alkalis, and salt water. This is due to the presence of chromium in the alloy.
- Strength: Alloy steel SS is a very strong material, with tensile strengths ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 psi. This strength is due to the combination of the alloying elements and the heat treatment process.
- Toughness: Alloy steel SS is also a tough material, meaning that it can absorb a lot of energy before it breaks. This is due to the microstructure of the alloy.
- Formability: Alloy steel SS is formable, meaning that it can be shaped into different forms without cracking or breaking. This is due to the ductility of the alloy.
- Weldability: Alloy steel SS is also weldable, meaning that it can be joined together using welding processes. This is important for many applications, such as fabrication of food processing equipment and medical devices.
Alloy steel SS properties:
* Add fixture < fixed>
* Create mesh. Any type of mesh you can apply but fine mesh gives enough accuracy.
There are many types of mesh-like triangular, rectangular it depending on the requirement
* Apply force on the face of 1500N.
* Now time to run the study and get the result. Click on the run study
Similarly remaining two beams are simulated and get results.

Result:
Maximum stress in all beams is lower than the yield strength of all beams are accepted in view of stress concentration but maximum displacement is least in c section beam and maximum in rectangular beam.
