BUCKLING ANALYSIS OF CYCLONIC SEPERATOR STAND
AIM
To perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand and study of the change in the buckling factor of safety on addition of a metallic stiffener to a cyclonic separator stand and finally obtain the optimum position of the metallic stiffener on the legs of the stand.
THEORY
Cyclonic Sepertors are the separation devices that use the principle of inertia to remove particulate matter from flue gases. It act as air pollution control device, since they generally remove larger pieces of particulate matter. This prevents finer filtration methods from having to deal with large, more abrasive particles later on. If several cyclone separators can operate in parallel, and the system is known as a multicyclone. Cyclones vary drastically in their size. The size of the cyclone largely depends on how much flue gas must be filtered, thus larger operations need larger cyclones. These separators are generally able to remove somewhere between 50-99% of all particulate matter in flue gas. Since cyclone separators are best for removing the large particulate matter. If there is a large amount of lighter particulate matter, less of these particles are able to be separated out. Because of this, cyclone separators work best on flue gases that contain large amounts of big particulate matter.
Advantages and Disadvantages in using cyclone separators
1. Cyclone separators are not much expensive to install or maintain, and they have no moving parts. Hence, maintenance and operating costs are low.
2. The removed particulate matter is collected when dry in order to make it easy for disposing.
3. The system takes very little space.
Disadvantages in using cyclone separators are the standard models are not able to collect particulate matter that is smaller than 10 micrometers effectively and the machines are unable to handle sticky or tacky materials well.
OBJECTIVE
1. To simulate a buckling analysis of the cyclonic separator stand.
2. To create a metallic stiffener for the legs of cyclonic separator stand.
3. To analyze the separator with the metallic stiffener and compare the buckling factor of safety.
4. To find the optimum position of the metallic stiffener by doing a design study.
ANALYSIS
Material Selection
Alloy steel is used as a material and the properties are listed below
CASE 1 BUCKING ANLYSIS OF CYCLONIC SEPERATOR STAND WITHOUT METALLIC STAND
PROCEDURE
1. Model a part file of the cyclonic separator stand.
2. Create a new study of Buckling analysis.
3. Apply the material as Alloy Steel.
4. Apply the fixtures.
5. Apply the loads
6. Generate a mesh with appropriate parameters.
7. Run the study.
3D MODEL
APPLYING FIXTURES AND LOAD AT REQUIRED POSITION
Load of 150KN is applied as shown in the figure
MESH GENERATION
Mesh size=2.5mm
Tolerance=0.25mm
RESULTS
The load of the 150KN on the Cyclonic seperator stand in terms of amplitude plot. From the plot, we can vizualize the maximum and minimum values of amplitude. The buckling factor of safety is the factor by which the structure is safe and the structural capacity in buckling. Generally, the buckling factor of safety should be greater than 3. The buckling factor of safety in our case is 9.39 which is safe for the Alloy steel.
OBSERVATION
From the analysis, we observed that the buckling factor of safety is 9.39 which shows that the cyclone separator will not buckle at the applied load of 150KN. The load must be increased by a factor of nine in order to buckle.
CASE 2 BUCKING ANLYSIS OF CYCLONIC SEPERATOR STAND WITH METALLIC STIFFNER
1. Model a part file of the cyclonic separator stand.
2. Create the Metallic Stiffener for the cyclonic separator.
3. Create a new study of Buckling analysis.
4. Apply the material as Alloy Steel.
5. Apply the fixtures.
6. Apply the loads
7. Generate a mesh with appropriate parameters.
8. Run the study.
9. Compare the results with previous analysis.
3D MODEL
APPLYING FIXTURES AND LOAD AT REQUIRED POSITION

The buckling factor of safety in our case is 27.93 which is safe for the Alloy steel.
OBSERVATION
From the analysis, we observed that the buckling factor of safety is 27.93 which shows that the cyclone separator will not buckle at the applied load of 150KN. The load must be increased by a factor of 27.93 in order to buckle.
COMPARISION OF ABOVE TWO CASES
| CASE | MAX AMPLITUDE | BUCKLING FOS |
| WITHOUT STIFFENER | 3.416e-03 | 9.393 |
| WITH STIFFENER | 3.512e-03 | 27.936 |
The amplitude will almost remain same for both the cases but there is large variation in buckling factor of safety.
CASE 3 OPTIMIZATION OF CYCLONIC SEPERATOR STAND WITH METALLIC STIFFNER USING STUDY

1. Create a new DESIGN Study.
2. Add Parameters to the variable section.
3. Select the appropriate variable with the minimum, maximum, and step values.
4. Add constraints to the constraint section.
5. Add the goal of the study.
6. Run the study.
Design Study
To find the best position of the metallic stiffener and designing for maximum buckling factor of safety through optimization technique.
INPUTS
1. Dimension is selected as a variable to change the position of stiffner from 500mm to 1800mm in step of 250mm.
2. Applying the constriant as buckling factor of safety which should be greater than 25.
3. Maximizing the buckling factor of safety is our goal in order to find the optimized senario.
RESULTS
OBSERVATION AND CONCLUSION
1. The scenario 2,3 and 4 showed the buckling factor of safety greater than 20.
2. The optimal result was found to be 1000mm for 150KN load with alloy steel as the material of the stiffener.
3. The buckling factor of safety was found to be 27.9358.
4. The buckling factor of safety can varied by changing the material and thickness of the metallic stiffener.
5. Buckling FOS for a cyclonic separator stand without stiffner is found to be 9.39.
6. It was increased to 27.93 by the addition of a metallic stiffener to its legs at distance of 1000 mm from the top surface.
7. Design study shows the buckling factor of safety can be varied to different values by changing the metallic position from top to bottom.
