Project

Bending of iPhone using Ansys

Objective - To simulate the bending of iPhone as per the given cases below.

Case 1 - Simulate the model.

Case 2 - Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

Procedure -

Create Static structural analysis and in engineering data select the materials.

Aluminium Alloy NL.

Glass.

Polyethylene.

Structural Steel.

Import the geometry and check in SpaceClaim for any irregularities.

Then open Ansys mechanical and rename the component as Display, Frame, Inside, Pushing_Finger and Fingers then assign the Aluminium Alloy NL material to Frame, Glass material to Display, Polyethylene material to Inside and Structural Steel to Pushing_Finger and Fingers.

All the Fingers and one Pushing_Finger stiffness behaviour set to Rigid Body.

Contact - Two types of contact created.

Bonded - Display To Frame

Frictionless

Joints

Fixed - Ground To Fingers for Fingers

Translational - Ground To Pushing_Fingers

Mesh - By using face sizing option the Pushing_Finger face mesh with element size of 4mm.

Analysis Settings - The simulation runs for 8 steps. So, the number of steps is set as 8.

Large deflection set to on, auto time stepping to program controlled, solver type set to direct and stabilization set to constant, method to energy and energy dissipation ratio to 0.1 and in Output control set all output to yes.

Fixed Support - provide to the inside component of the model.

Displacement - Frame of the iphone gives free motion in Y direction only.

Joint - Displacement - both the Pushing_Finger give the displacement of 8mm.

Run the simulation and results obtained.

Result - The analysis runs successfully and results obtained.

Directional Deformation Max - 5.5114 mm

Equivalent Stress Max - 824.46 Mpa

Directional Deformation of Frame Max - 5.3423 mm

Equivalent Stress of Frame Max - 602.58 Mpa

Animation - Directional Deformation

Case 2 - Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm and obtain the results for the simulation. Also define the S-N curve for the Aluminium Alloy material as per values given below and determine the fatigue life results for the same.

In Material, for Aluminium Alloy NL material defines the S-N curve for determining the fatigue life results.

In Spaceclaim, Move the bottom fingers from their defined position to the given position X= 22.5mm & Z= 10mm

Other properties like contacts, joint, mesh, analysis setting, boundary conditions kept the same as Case1.

Run the simulation and results obtained.

Result - The analysis runs successfully and results obtained.

Directional Deformation Max - 4.3667 mm

Equivalent Stress Max - 1100.2 Mpa

Directional Deformation of Frame Max - 4.3667 mm

Equivalent Stress of Frame Max - 377.41 Mpa

Animation - Directional Deformation

Life of Aluminium Alloy NL Frame - 75331 Min

Safety Factor of Aluminium Alloy NL Frame - 0.42394 Min

Conclusion -

  • The Equivalent Stress of fraame in Case 2 is less than from Case 1, because in Case 2 the fingers are in the center and stress is uniformly distributed.
  • After defining the SN curve for Aluminium Alloy NL, life and safety factor can be determined for the iphone frame.
