Basics of Probability and Statistics Week 1 Challenge

1)

The formula for population variance and sample variance is different because population variance is calculated using the entire population while sample variance is calculated using a subset of the population. Population variance takes into account the variability of all members of the population, whereas sample variance takes into account the variability of only the members of the subset of the population.

2)

The difference between stratified and cluster sampling is that stratified sampling ensures that all the strata are adequately represented in the sample, while cluster sampling does not.

3)

The answer to this question will depend on the type of population and the type of sample you are trying to create. Generally, the number of possible samples is equal to the number of combinations of population elements, which is equal to n factorial (n!).

The standard deviation and the variance measure the same thing: the amount of variation or dispersion from the average. However, the standard deviation is a slightly more robust statistic because it uses the squares of the deviations from the mean in its calculation, which gives more weight to larger deviations. As a result, the standard deviation is often preferred over the variance.
