Assignment 2
INTRODUCTION TO RADIOSS
1. Check the material properties of the rail component and calculate the speed of sound in steel rail= 5188.745 mm/ms.
- c, speed of sound = √ (E/ρ) .
- Where E=210000 N/mm2 , ρ = 0.0078 g/mm2 obtained from material properties in Starter file FIRST_RUN_0000.
2. The length of the rail is about 1000 mm.calculate the time takes for a shock wave to travel from one end of the rail to the other.
3.Time for sound to travel length of rail= _0.192 ms__.
- time t= d/s = 1000/5188.745
- where d= length of rail , s= speed of sound.
4.Edit the engine file so that the stress wave can be monitored, moving from one end of the rail to the other during impact -this will require a termination time equal to the time it takes for the sound to travel the length of the rail(set on/RUN card)
5.Set the frequency of animation output to a time that will give 20 animation steps(/ANIM/DT)
- Total time taken for sound to travel the length of rail/ 20 = 0.0096 ms
6.Change /print -10.

7. 3D meshing tetra mesh and hex mesh
- Repeat class examples and, maintain the quality.
- Target tet size=5mm,hex size=10mm,tet collapse=0.15.
* 1D Elements
1. Import the part-1.hm to Hypermesh.
2. Create a surface from lines present using Geometry > surface command.
3. Assign the property and material.
4. Mesh with element size 5mm.
5. Under 1D > Bar select 2 nodes and create a bar element.
6. Under 1D > Hyperbeam create a cross section for bar element and assign property and material to it.
7. Preview its thickness using 1D Traditional Detailed and Element Representation.
* 3D Tertamesh
1. Import the housing.hm file to Hypermesh under radioss profile.
2. Under 3D > Tetramesh, set the tetra mesh parameters, min length=2 and max length=7.
3. Go to Volume tetra set element size as 5mm and select the surfaces and mesh seperately the cover and hub.
4. Press F10 and check the elements for tet collapse on th left bottom of the screen.
* 3D HEXA MESHING
1. Import the armbracket.hm file to Hypermesh.
2. 2D > Automesh the base component with quads with target element size 5mm.
3. 3D > Solidmap > line drag select the elements to drag and lines to follow along and mesh.
4. For arm portion 3D > spin is used to create the hexa mesh about the center node as base point.
5. Tools > Face is used to duplicate the elements to create a solid.
6. Delete all unnecessary elements to 3D > linear solid the elements about the straight arm of the component.
7. Create 2 nodes on the boss component to map the mesh along the straight arm for connectivity.
8. 3D > Linear drag the elements 2d meshed on the boss surface about the nodepath.
9. Tools > Organize the elements to the respective components and delete unwanted quad4 elements.
10. Press Shift+F3 and select elements displayed and select faces , connect the elements if not using replace nodes(F3).
