Assignment 1

Objective : To perform geometry cleanup on all the components, extract their midsurfaces, mesh them and assign a thickness to thembased on parent geometry.

Procedure : There are 3 components in this assignment. We will perform the operations on each of them individually.

  • Part_1 :

Geometry cleanup : First we will perform the geometry cleanup for the given component.

First we check for any solids. Go to delete-->solids. For this model there are no solids so we do not need to perform this option. Next we go to geom-->defeature-->duplicates to check for any duplicated surfaces. If there are none we may proceed.

Then we will go to geom-->quick edit and toggle all the free edges. If there are any missing surfaces we can fill them up using filler surface option in quick edit panel.

This above section we will use filler surf to get a green edge. In this manner we will complete the geometry cleanup to get this component.

Midsurface : Next we will extract the midsurface automatically by geom-->midsurface. Here in extraction options we will select skin offset method.

Then we will select the displayed surfaces and click on extract. As we can see the midsurface is extracted for the component. We will next defeature all the small holes which are 5mm and smaller in diameter using defeature-->pinholes.

Will will also defeature all the surf fillets in the defeature panel as shown in the above picture.

We will also fill in certain surfaces where the elements might fail the minimum length quality criteria of 3.5mm

Mesh : Next we will mesh the given midsurface with an element size of 5mm.

We will select the given surfaces and click on mesh to generate the mesh on the surfaces. we will select the align, size & skew options as well before extracting the midsurfaces.

As expected our mesh fails the minimum size criteria in certain faces where the filets were earlier present. In order to fix these elements we can ignore the feature capturing as follows.

These are the areas where the elements are failing. We will go to 2d-->elem cleanup, choose the failing elements and click on cleanup option to fix them.

For the other region we will bring the surfaces to the same level as shown as we do not have any other option to save these elements.

To reduce trias from the rest of the geometry we can select a block of elements and remesh them to get all quads in that region.

Quality checks : We will next go to 2d--> quality index to see that there are no failing elements as shown.

The following criteria is used to check the mesh of the component.

Go to tool-->check elems-->2d to check this option as shown and enter the parameter values.

Assigning thickness : Next we will assign a thickness by creating a property. Right click in model tree section create-->property-->T = 0.91 as this is the thickness of the parent geometry and assign it to middle surface component.

To check if the property has been assigned successfully go to display mesh-->by prop as shown.

Select 2d element representation to see the thickness being assigned to the mesh as shown above. In this way we have completed the operations for this component.

  • Part_2 :

Geometry cleanup : First we will perform the geometry cleanup for the given component.

First we check for any solids. Go to delete-->solids. For this model there are no solids so we do not need to perform this option. Next we go to geom-->defeature-->duplicates to check for any duplicated surfaces. If there are none we may proceed.

Then we will go to geom-->quick edit and toggle all the free edges. If there are any missing surfaces we can fill them up using filler surface option in quick edit panel.

We will remove all these pinholes from the midsurface component as they are 5mm or below and with a minimum element size of 3.5mm it is not possible to properly capture these features. Next for the big holes we will create washer split in the quick edit panel of offset 3.5mm as that is our minimum element length.

We will also fix these edges by using replace point option in quick edit panel.

Mesh : Next we will mesh the given midsurface with an element size of 5mm.

We will select the given surfaces and click on mesh to generate the mesh on the surfaces. we will select the align, size & skew options as well before extracting the midsurfaces. We try to reduce the trias in the model by not disturbing the washer split elements around the big holes.

To reduce trias from the rest of the geometry we can select a block of elements and remesh them to get all quads in that region. In this way we will try to reduce the trias wherever they can be eliminated. To smoothen the mesh we will use smooth option in 2d panel.

Hence the mesh has been completed. Next we will check if there are any failing elements. If there are we

Quality checks : We will next go to 2d--> quality index to see that there are no failing elements as shown.

These are the areas where the elements are failing. We will go to 2d-->elem cleanup, choose the failing elements and click on cleanup option to fix them.

The following criteria is used to check the mesh of the component.

Go to tool-->check elems-->2d to check this option as shown and enter the parameter values.

Assigning thickness : Next we will assign a thickness by creating a property. Right click in model tree section create-->property-->T = 2.0 as this is the thickness of the parent geometry and assign it to middle surface component.

To check if the property has been assigned successfully go to display mesh-->by prop as shown.

Select 2d element representation to see the thickness being assigned to the mesh as shown above. In this way we have completed the operations for this component.

  • Part_3 :

Geometry cleanup : First we will perform the geometry cleanup for the given component.

First we check for any solids. Go to delete-->solids. For this model there are no solids so we do not need to perform this option. Next we go to geom-->defeature-->duplicates to check for any duplicated surfaces. If there are none we may proceed.

Midsurface : Next we will extract the midsurface automatically by geom-->midsurface. Here in extraction options we will select skin offset method.

Then we will select the displayed surfaces and click on extract. As we can see the midsurface is extracted for the component.

We will toggle these edges as they will definitely fail the minimum length quality criteria.

We will remove all these pinholes from the midsurface component as they are 5mm or below and with a minimum element size of 3.5mm it is not possible to properly capture these features.

Mesh : Next we will mesh the given midsurface with an element size of 5mm.

In these areas we will reduce the number of elements from 3 to 2 along those columns as shown.

There are many elements failing the minimum element criteria so we will fix them by going to 2d-->elem cleanup and clicking on cleanup option.

Certain elements failing by warpage criteria, when we click on cleanup, they will be rectified.

To reduce trias from the rest of the geometry we can select a block of elements and remesh them to get all quads in that region. In this way we will try to reduce the trias wherever they can be eliminated. To smoothen the mesh we will use smooth option in 2d panel.

When we are satisified with the mesh we can proceed to the next step

Quality Checks : We will next go to 2d--> quality index to see that there are no failing elements as shown.

The following criteria is used to check the mesh of the component.

Go to tool-->check elems-->2d to check this option as shown and enter the parameter values.

Assigning thickness : Next we will assign a thickness by creating a property.

Conclusion : Hence we have Performed the geometry cleanup, midsurface extraction and meshing operations on above 3 components as shown.
