ANALYSIS OF PLATE WITH HOLE
ANALYSIS OF PLATE WITH HOLE
AIM – To compare stress, strain and displacement in same loading conditions on two plates with holes of given dimensions.
OBJECTIVES-
- Create two plates of two plates with holes of given dimensions.
- Run static analysis for both of them.
- Compare the results.
INTRODUCTION-
Tensile testing, also known as tension testing, is a fundamental materials science and engineering test in which a sample is subjected to a controlled tension until failure. Properties that are directly measured via a tensile test are ultimate tensile strength, breaking strength, maximum elongation and reduction in area. From these measurements the following properties can also be determined: Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, yield strength, and strain-hardening characteristics.
Tensile testing might have a variety of purposes, such as:
- Select a material or item for an application.
- Predict how a material will perform in use: normal and extreme forces.
- Determine if, or verify that, the requirements of a specification, regulation, or contract are met.
- Decide if a new development program is on track.
- Demonstrate proof of concept.
- Demonstrate the utility of a proposed patent.
- Provide standard data for other scientific, engineering, and quality assurance functions.
- Provide a basis for technical communication.
- Provide a technical means of comparison of several options.
- Provide evidence in legal proceedings.
For stress around a hole at centre of infinite plate we have following correlation:
PROCEDURE-
- Create 3d models of plates with help of dimensions provided
PLATE1:
Length = 300mm
Height = 120mm
Thickness = 30mm
Circular Hole at the centre: Diameter=60mm
PLATE2:
Length = 300mm
Height = 120mm
Thickness = 30mm
Circular Hole at the centre: Diameter=60mm
Two holes of 30 mm diameter which are placed 90mm away from the central hole on both sides.
- Click on Simulation tab. Select Linear>static. Apply material alloy steel to plate.
- Select Fixed geometry of one of the smaller end faces of each plate.
- Apply a load of 1000N on the other smaller side face.
- Click on mesh and set parameter to 6mm to generate fine mesh.
- Click on run.
- Compare the results.

CONCLUSIONS & EXPLANATIONS-
- Comparing stress values in each case we can see that more stress is developed in plate 1 when compared to plate 2 which has two more holes.
- Comparing displacement values we can see that less displacement is observed in plate1 while more displacement is observed in plate 2 which has less mass.
- Comparing strain values in each case we can see that more strain is developed in plate 1 when compared to plate 2.
- Clearly the stress concentration has maximum value near holes. Clearly plate 2 has more number of holes, less mass. Hence, the stress develops is distributed among the holes.
