Air Standard Cycle(Creating the PV diagram of Otto cycle by using Matlab)

AIM:

To create the PV diagram of an Otto cycle and obtain the thermal efficiency of the engine.

Governing Equations

v_swept = (pi/4)*bore^2*stroke;
v_clearance = v_swept/(cr-1);

v1 = v_swept + v_clearance;
For state variables at state point 2

p2v2^gamma = p1v1^gamma
p2 = p1*(v1/v2)^gamma = p1*cr^gamma
p2 = p1*cr^gamma
For state variables at state point 3

v3 = v2
p3v3/t3 = p2v2/t2
p3 = p2*t3/t2
#
term1 = 0.5*(cr-1)
term2 = R+1-cosd(theta)
term3 = (R^2 - sind(theta).^2).^0.5
v = (1+term1*(term2-term3))*v_c
OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to create the PV diagram of an Otto cycle and obtain the thermal efficiency of the engine by using Matlab.
This will help in analysing the engine kinematics and helps in the reduction of error in manufacturing of the engine parts.

An Otto cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that describes the functioning of a typical spark ignition piston engine. It is most commonly found in automobile engines.

The part of the above program is shown below:

%state variables at state point 2

%p2v2^gamma = p1v1^gamma
%p2 = p1*(v1/v2)^gamma = p1*cr^gamma
p2 = p1*cr^gamma;

%p1v1/t1 = p2v2/t2 | t2 = p2*v2*t1/(p1*v1)
t2 = p2*v2*t1/(p1*v1);

At state point 2, there is adiabatic compression process. For this process the required formula for adiabatic compression process is applied.
Similarly at state point 3 and 4 , there is adiabatic expansion process and constant volume heat rejection process respectively.

The above figure shows the output of the main program.

Initially, I have done simple program which didn't give the accurate PV diagram for an Otto cycle. It is shown in the figure below:

The ouput (PV diagram) shown in the above figure is wrong. To solve this problem, I have created a secondary program using Function.

This program helps to create a function and is used in the main program to get actual PV diagram of an Otto cycle.

Error faced

Here, one input is less . End crank is not given any value. Therefore, the program throws an error. Every input parameters should be entered before running the program.

CONCLUSION:

This program is to create the PV diagram of an Otto cycle and obtain the thermal efficiency of the engine. Two different programs are created to obtain the actual PV diagram. In sub program , function is used. This project helps in analysing the piston movement in the engine. It will minimize the errors during the manufacturing of the engine components.
