Universal Joint
Objective :
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials:
Case1 Structural Steel
Case2 Stainless Steel
Case3 Titanium alloy
Geometry:
Provided geometry was imported into spaceclaim
Materials :
Case1:
Case2:
Case 3:
Meshing:
Default mesh of Element size 2mm was provided :
Connectrions:
Connections were not defined as our area of focus was on spring .
Joints :
Fixed joint assigned at spring face .
Revolute joint assigned on the faces of jaw
Revolute joint assigned everywhere between the ball & the jaw interface
Results:

Comparison of results:
Material Stress (MPA) Strain mm/mm Force required on driving side (N)
Structural seel 1425.5 0.007138 236
Stainless steel 1380.6 0.00715 226.18
Titanium alloy 700 0.0072958 111.31
Conclusion
- Total deformation in all the cases was same .
- We found the stress induced on them .
- We were able to determine how much force would be required for this operation moreover if we wanted to get drivetrain losses we can even find them including contacts and assigning friction coefficient values .
Thus the simulation was successfully carried out .
