UNIVERSAL JOINT

Transient analysis of Universal Joint

Procedure:

Firstly, we need to import the geometry into Ansys Workbench. Three different materials STRUCTURAL STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL and TITANIUM ALLOY are extracted from the engineering data sources. For spring joint, analysis is carried using these three different materials in each case. In the mechanical modules, we are not interested in contacts between joins, we need to delete al the default contacts and specify one fixed joint at the end of spring and all necessary revolute joints. In analysis settings, The time step for all 5 steps is specified as 0.1 and all the output controls are turned on. Now, we need to define the load, as rotation upto 150 degrees starting from 30 with the difference of 30 degrees in each step. Co-ordinates are ensured as the rotation of all joints is about Z axis. Now required output parameters are extracted. The mesh defined is default size.

From above table, it is clear that the stress values decreases with change in material but the deformation remains exactly same. We can conclude by saying that structural steel is ready to withstand more load when compared to that of other materials.
