Transient structural analysis on a universal joint
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring made up of three different materials using ANSYS workbench and compare the results of Equivalent stress and Total deformation.
Procedure:
Transient structural analysis system is opened in the project schematic window of ANSYS workbench and renamed as Universal joint.
Materials Used:
The following materials are used only on the joint with the spring required for the analysis which are found in the General materials section of the Engineering data sources.
Case 1:Structural steel
Case 2:Stainless steel
Case 3:Titanium alloy
Geometry:
The given model is imported into Design modeller and checked if any abnormalities are present in the model. The parts of the model are renamed accordingly as Centre block,Spring,Ball joint 1,Ball joint 2 and Yoke.
Meshing:
The model is meshed with 3mm element size and tetrahedral elements.
Joints:
The free end of the spring is fixed with Body-Ground connection type.
Body to ground revolute joint type connection is defined for both the joints.
Body to body revolute joint type is defined for all the pins in the ball joints.
Boundary condition:
A rotational joint load is defined for the face of the yoke joint with 9 timesteps and 30 degree rotation per step.
Results:
Case 1:Structural steel
Total deformation
Equivalent stress
Case 2:Stainless steel
Total deformation
Equivalent stress
Case 3:Titanium alloy
Total deformation
Equivalent stress
Inference:
From the results obtained,it is found that
|
Case |
Material |
Max.Total deformation (mm) |
Max.Equivalent stress (MPa) |
|
1 |
Structural steel |
38.637 |
1562.2 |
|
2 |
Stainless steel |
38.637 |
1512.5 |
|
3 |
Titanium alloy |
38.637 |
766.84 |
Conclusion:
Thus,a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring made up of three different materials using ANSYS workbench is performed and results are compared.
From the inference,it is evident that joint with Structural steel has the highest stress and joint with Titanium alloy has the lowest stress. This is because of the highest Young\'s Modulus of Titanium alloy than that of Structural steel. Also the total deformation in all cases are same.
