Project

To mesh the given component by extracting midsurface

Objective: To mesh the given component as per the criteria.

Procedure:

1. The model is imported in Hyperworks. The midsurface is extracted from the Inner Body and isolated by hiding other bodies. It is made current component.

Autocleanup is carried out on the midsurface.

2. The component is split horizontally as shown so as to reduce the meshing time.

3. Meshing is carried out a few surfaces at a time. In this case the washer splits are selected first.

Automesh command is used, and 5mm quad elements are used to create the mesh.

Node numbers are adjusted to improve the mesh quality.

4. Other surfaces are meshed similarly.

Mesh quality is checked by using the Quality Index command.

Failing elements are remeshed/corrected using the cleanup tools like Element Optimise, Place node etc.

Tria elements are eliminated using Drag Tria and Combine Tria commands.

The Mesh quality is improved to reduce the amount of rotational quads and irregular quads.

5. After every iteration of meshing, the mesh is checked for the required criteria using the QualityIndex tool.

After the mesh is of a satisfactory quality, the elements are reflected as shown:

6. Element cleanup is performed and Check Edges command is used to remove any gaps by using the equivalence option.

7. Now the Inner body is hidden and the midsurface is extraced from the Outer body.

It is made current.

Autocleanup is performed on the midsurface.

Similar to previous component, it is horizontally split to reduce meshing time.

8. It is then split into segments as shown by using lines created by the XYZ command

9. Automesh is used to mesh the component a few surfaces at a time.

Mesh Quality is continuously refined till a satisfactory mesh is obtained that passes the given criteria.

10. After all the surfaces are meshed, the mesh is reflected as shown:

The component is checked for equivalence and free edges, and Element cleanup is performed.

11. Now the body is hidden and midsurface is extracted from the Latch body.

Autocleanup is performed on the midsurface and the body is made current.

12. Meshing is carried out a few surfaces at a time as shown:

13. After the component is meshed completely, the mesh is checked for the quality criteria using Qualityindex and any failing elements are corrected.

14. Element cleanup is performed on the mesh.

15. The body is hidden, and midsurface is extracted from Hinge reinforcement 1. It is made current. Autocleanup is performed on the body.

16. It is meshed as shown, few surfaces at a time:

The meshed is checked against the required criteria and element cleanup is performed.

17. A new component is created and made current.

The Hinge Reinforcement 1 mesh is duplicated into the new component and reflected about the middle to obtain the mesh for the Hinge reinforcement 2.

18. Thus all the components are meshed.

Conlusion: All the components are successfully meshed according to the required criteria.

Following tools were used:

Geom - Midsurface, quickedit, edge edit, autocleanup, lines, tempnodes, surface edit

2D - automesh, edit element, quality index, element cleanup

Tools - Reflect, project, check elems, edges
