Create the workflow in ansys workbench

ELECTRONIC COOLING SIMULATIONS USING ANSYS ICEPAK

WEEK 3 ASSIGNMENT

PROJECT: To create the workflow in ansys workbench and import the CAD model (Power assy enclosure) into spaceclaim so as to defeature it and convert it into icepak primitive shapes for Icepak.

PROCESS:

  • Start with ansys workbench and add the GEOMETRY, ICEPAK and RESULTS component systems to the working area.
  • Link the added components.
  • Start SPACECLAIM and open the CAD model i.e. the Power assy Enclosure.
  • Start deleting the unwanted extrusions, rounds, filltes, bolts, wahers etc.
  • Use the Split body feature from design section to split the bodies and remove the unwanted parts from the model.
  • Delete the rounds and chamfers by selecting all the similar rounds from the selection tree.
  • Use the features from the design section.
  • Since there wil be a socket going inside the attachment, the above highlighted area will remain closed. Hence for analysis purpose it is required to close the area. It is accomplished by using the PULL feature for closing the area.
  • Delete the fasteners like bolts and wahers since they are unnecessary for analysis.
  • Likewise delete all the unnecessary items and also fill the gaps that are suppose to be closed using the features.
  • The model after defeaturing looks like this (below image - top of enclosure is hidden)
  • From the workbench section, select the grille option to convert the grilles provided into icepak primitive for icepak.
  • The components in the model need to be categorised according to the following vitality:
    • FOCUSED BODIES: These are the most important components since they are directly responsible for the thermal issues.
    • NECESSARY BODIES: These bodies in some or the other way affect the focused bodies.
    • PERIPHERAL BODIES: These bodies may or may not affect the focused bodies.
    • DISPENSIBLE BODIES: These do not affect the focused bodies.
  • Splitting the bodies on the PCB since it is acting as a whole single component. All the components should be split and act as individual component.
  • Identify the Icepak objects.
  • The unidentified icepak objects needed to be simplified so as to convert them in icepak objects.
  • Use the ICEPAK SIMPLIFY tool to convert the components into icepak primitives (show only the non-icepak bodies)
  • Some examples of the icepak simplification for the current model using different levels:
  • After completely simplifying the model looks like this (Top of enclosure is hidden)
  • Save the model as icepak model and open it in icepak.
  • Already we have converted the grilles in spaceclaim using the grille option. However 1 grille is left to be converted on purpose just to show that it can be done in icepak as well.
  • Following grille has been created in icepak using the grille option
  • Final model after modifying the components so as to form grille.

RESULTS: The model has been completely defeatured and has been converted to icepak primitive for analysis in icepak.

CONCLUSION: The model is completed and ready for analysis in icepak.
