Tensile & Torsional test on a Carbon steel (1006) specimen

Tension Test mesh parameters

  1. Mesh method: Patch conforming – tetrahedrons (on complete body)
  2. Two face sizings on the faces to be clamped: two coordinate systems are replicated at the respective geometric centres of the faces shown above and a sphere of influence with radius 22mm is assigned to both with an element size of 3mm

Torsion test mesh parameters (in addition to above)

  1. The two faces adjacent to the centre cylindrical face are assigned a face sizing of 1.5mm
  2. The central cylindrical face is assigned a face sizing with a sphere of influence having an 8mm radius and an element size of 1mm.

This simulation consists of two models of explicit dynamics – tensile and torsional loading on a Carbon steel test specimen

Tensile test Specs: One clamped cylindrical face and its base circular face are fixed; the other pair is assigned a single step axial displacement of 18mm

Torsion Test specs: The fixed support is applied to the faces same as above and a cylindrical coordinate system is introduced – a 12000 displacement is assigned to the y-component

Conclusion

Tension test: The stress values obtained from the simulation indicate that the test specimen has entered its plastic region (permanent deformation) and has reaching the necking stage (sharp reduction in cross sectional area) while the strain values suggest that it is yet to reach its failure point; the temperature is maximum at the centre of the test specimen as indicated above.

Torsion test: The obtained values of the parameters above (stress and strain) indicate the test specimen fails at the applied displacement; the maximum stress and temperature occur at the point of immediate failure
