TENSION AND TORSION TEST ON STEEL SPECIMEN USING ANSYS WORK BENCH
AIM:
To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen considering the case setups and find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.
TENSION TEST:
- A tensile test, also known as a tension test, is one of the most fundamental and common types of mechanical testing. A tensile test applies tensile (pulling) force to a material and measures the specimen\'s response to the stress.
TORSION TEST:
- Torsion testing involves the twisting of a sample along an axis and is a useful test for acquiring information like torsional shear stress, maximum torque, shear modulus, and breaking angle of a material or the interface between two materials.
CASE SETUP: 1 : TENSION TEST
- To displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other end fixed
PROCEDURE FOR IMPORTING THE MODEL:
- Open Explicit dynamics from the Analysis systems.
- Assign the material type to the model to be imported using the tool Engineering data-Edit-Engineering data sources.
MATERIAL PROPERTIES OF STEEL 1006
- Import the MODEL file using the tool Geometry-import.
PROCEDURE FOR TENSILE TEST:
- Update the model to work on the model for structural analysis.
- Under Model-geometry assign the name for the model.
- Create separate coordinate system for each part of the model.
- Mesh the model by considering the element type as tetrahedron and the element size as 3mm for the setup.
- In Analysis setting tab under Explicit Dynamics menu enter the end time as 1e-3.
- Insert the displacement menu for one end of the specimen to specify the displacement distance 18mm.
- Insert the fixed support menu for another end of the specimen to prevent from sliding off.
- Insert the total deformation, von mises stress solution and userdefined temperature for the model. Then press f5 to solve.
RESULTS:
DEFORMATION
VON-MISES STRESS
TEMPERATURE
CASE SETUP: 1 : TORSION TEST
- To displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree while keeping the other end fixed.
PROCEDURE FOR TORSION TEST:
- Update the model to work on the model for structural analysis.
- Under Model-geometry assign the name for the model.
- Create separate cartesion coordinate system for each part of the model and cylindrical coordinate for the center part of the model.
Cartesian Coordinate Cylindrical Coordinate
- Mesh the model by considering the element type as tetrahedron and the element size as 3mm for both the ends, 1.5mm in the conical area and 1mm in the mid area of specimen.
- In Analysis setting tab under Explicit Dynamics menu enter the end time as 1e-3.
- Insert the displacement menu for one end of the specimen to specify the displacement rotation angle as 1200 degree.
- Insert the fixed support menu for another end of the specimen to prevent from sliding off.
- Insert the total deformation, von mises stress solution and userdefined temperature for the model. Then press f5 to solve.
RESULT:
DEFORMATION
VON-MISES STRESS
TEMPERATURE
CONCLUSION:
Thus the tension and torsion test were performed on the specimen considering the case setups and the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen were found out.
