TENSILE AND TORSION TESTING OF STEEL SPECIMEN

A) TITLE:- Tension and torsion testing using ansys workbench 2019 V3.

B) OBJECTIVE :- To simulate the tensile testing and torsion testing operation on steel specimen to study different parameters like equivalnet stress , equivalent strain, temperature etc.

C) MODELING :- The model consisting of a standard tensile testing specimen has imported into explicit dynamic module of ansys workbench.

D) ANALYSIS :-

1)The specimen is assigned with steel material.

2)Meshing is very important to achieve the accurate results. for meshing different coordinate systems were defined at different sections of the specimen.

  • TESTING UNDER TENSILE LOAD

3) The tetrahedran elements are used for the meshing with patch conforming menthod. the different mesh sizing has been used at different sections. the end sections of the specimen are assigned with 20 mm sphere of influenece and 2 mm mesh size. all other section is assigned with default mesh sizing.

4)The analysis end time is defined as 0.001 sec.

5) one end of te specimen is made fixed while the other end of the specimen has been given a displacement of 18 mm.

6) the simulation is then carried out and the results obtained are summarized below:-

E) RESULTS :-

i) total deformation

ii) equivalent stress

iii) temperature

  • TESTING UNDER TORSION LOADING

7) For testing of specimen under torsional loading , the meshin is first refined in the middle section of the specimen using 8 mm sphere of influence and 1 mm mesh size. the other sections are meshed with 2 mm mesh size.

8) a cylinderical coordinate system has been set up at the cetre section of specimen. one ned is made fixed and other end is twisted throgh 1200 derees.

9) the simulation is then carried out with end time of 0.001 sec and the results obtained are summarized below.

F) RESULTS :-

The total results for tensile and torsion loading are summarized below:-

G) DISCUSSIONS:-

I) The equivalent stress in torsional loading is more ( 653.77 MPa) than that of in tensile loading.

II) The maximum total deformation is more in torsional loading .

III) The temperature generated in these processes are because of the molecular slippings/dislocations which dissipate the heat. it can be observed that the maximum temperature generated in torsional loading ( 432.48 C ) is almost double than that of in case of tensile loading ( 259.17 degree C).

FAILURE MODES :-

Another important factor that how the steel material will fail under tensile and torsional loading that can be observed and verified from these simulations.

For ductile materials , maximum shear stress theory is considered As a failure criterion. according to this theory when the induced stress in the body exceeds the maximum shear stress of that material the material fails.

I) In case of tensile loading , the maximum shear stress generated at the 45 degree planes to the direction of principal stresses. hence formation of cup and cone can be observed in the simulation and the specimen fails at 45 degrees to the normal loading.

II) now in case of torsional loading the shear laoding is applied on the body hence the specimen tends to fail in the same plane of load of application whic can be observed from the simulation.
