Surface meshing of cylinder using ANSA

OBJECTIVE: To perform surface mesh of given cylinder using ANSA

MESH: A mesh is a discretization of a geometric domian into small simple shapes, such as triangles or quadrilateral in two dimensions and tetrahedra or hexahedra in three dimensions.Mesh are essential in numerical solution of differential equations arising in physical simulations.

METHODOLOGY:

1.The given cylinder \"cylinder.SLDPRT\" was imported to ANSA.

2. Geomentry checks were performed to ensure the geomentry was error free(such as cons, cracks, unchecked faces, sharp edges etc)

3. The following properties were set to the faces of the geomentry

  • inlet
  • inlet_wall
  • cylinder_wall
  • outlet

4. The element size was set to 1 units using length command in perimeter section.

5.Mesh generation was performed using Spot mesh generation technique. In spot mesh Different types of elements can be used(such as triangle, quadrilateral, ortho triangle and mixed). Triangle elements were selected to construct equilateral triangular mesh in order to uniform mesh throughout the geomentry.Reconstruct option was enabled inorder to reconstruct mesh.

6.After mesh generation, surface mesh checks were performed in order to ensure quality surface mesh.

Procedure:

1. Imorting the geomentry and performing geomentry check

a. cylinder.SLDPRT was imported to ANSA using file-->open command.

b. In visualization toolbar, shadow option was enabled and draw mode was set to PID mode

c. Geometry checks were performed using check-->geometry command. Geomentry checks were performed in order to ensure that the geometry is error free(i.e geometry is free from defects such as sharp edges, cracks, collapsed cons, unchecked faces etc.).

2. Setting up Properties using set PID command

a. Cross hateshes were enabled in visualization toolbar in order to select the faces to which properties are to be assigned.

b. Properties were set using faces-->set PID command. Appropriate faces of geometry were selected in order to set appropriate properties.

c. The following properties were set to the faces of the geomentry

  • inlet
  • inlet_wall
  • cylinder_wall
  • outlet

d. The color displayed near the property name in the properties toolbar displayed respective faces that are set to a particular property ID.for example, inlet is displayed with violet color in the properties tollbar in order to show that the faces covered with violet color were assigned to a inlet property with PID 2.

3. Setting up element size and checking the element size between nodes using Measure command

a.After setting the properties to faces of geomentry, in order to proceed to mesh section, Mesh module was selected.

b. The element size was set to 1 units to all edges of geometry by using perimeters-->length command and selecting all edges of geomentry.

c. In order to check whether element size of 1 unit is distributed throught the geometry, element size between two nodes is measured by using measure-->nodes command and selecting two nodes as displayed below.

d. Element size between two nodes were calculated to 0.99924 which is close to 1 unit.

4. Mesh generation using spot mesh command:

a. after generating nodes by selcting element size to be 1 unit, mesh is generated using mesh generation-->spot mesh command.

b.In spot mesh Different types of elements can be used(such as triangle, quadrilateral, ortho triangle and mixed). Triangle elements were selected to construct equilateral triangular mesh in order to uniform mesh throughout the geomentry.

c. Reconstruct option was enabled inorder to reconstruct mesh.

d. Total number of triangular mesh was 592366 elements.

5. Performing Surface mesh checks

a. After mesh generation, in order to ensure there are no irregularities in the mesh, Surface mesh checks are being performed by using check manager--> surface_mesh_checks_cfd command.

b. Various surface mesh quality checks are being performed in surface_mesh_checks_cfd toolbar and quality mesh is generated.

Conclusion:

Surface mesh with triangular elements(total =592366) is generated to given cylinder geometry.
