Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
OBJECTIVE:-
- To perform stress concentration with single and multiple holes.
- Comparing the deformation and maximum stress developed on the structural steel model for both the cases.
- To understand and point out the best design on the basis of Analysis and Manufacturing standpoint.
Case 1:- Stress Concentration having single hole.
Plate dimensions:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Procedure:-
-> In the Workbench Software, we ll perform the operation under Static Structural option.
-> Structural Steel is selected, by default, in the Engineering Data.
-> A plate with a single hole was created in SpaceClaim Geometry according to the given.
-> Boundary conditions was assigned in the very next step in the model, as following:
Left face was fixed while the Right face was applied with Force of 500 N.
-> Tetrahedron Mesh with element size 4 mm was done on the given component.
RESULT:-
Total Deformation:-
Minimum = 0 mm ; Maximum = 0.00027493 mm
Von-Mises Stress:-
Minimum = 0.012226 MPa ; Maximum = 0.60216 MPa
Case 2:- Stress Concentration having multiple holes.
Plate dimensions:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Two smaller holes 90mm away from the center. Diameter=30mm.
Procedure:-
-> In the Workbench Software, we ll perform the operation under Static Structural option.
-> Structural Steel is selected, by default, in the Engineering Data.
-> A plate with a multiple hole was created in SpaceClaim Geometry according to the given.
-> Boundary conditions was assigned in the very next step in the model, as following:
Left face was fixed while the Right face was applied with Force of 500 N.
-> Tetrahedron Mesh with element size 4 mm was done on the given component.
RESULT:-
Total Deformation:-
Minimum = 0 mm ; Maximum = 0.00029702 mm
Von-Mises Stress:-
Minimum = 0.0017716 MPa ; Maximum = 0.5802 MPa
CONCLUSION:-
- On comparing both the cases, the deformation is greater in the plate with multiple holes because the position of smaller holes lie closer to the applied force, also the material amount is less than that of single hole plate.
- The Von Mises stress in multi hole plate is uniformly distributed as compared to single hole.
On the basis of Analytical Point of view, we can conclude that the plate with multi holes is better suited for analysis. The reason can be stated as due to the fact that more data and results can be calculated on different portion of the plate, moreover since it has uniform stress concentration, it will have more life compared to the single hole plate.
On the basis of Manufacturing Point of view, plate with single hole is better compared to the multiple holes plate due to less wastage of materials, less operation, less manufacturing cost.
