Rail Wheel & Track Structural Analysis using ANSYS Workbench
Perform a static structural analysis on the Railwheel and Track setup and
Problem 1: With two Different Bearing Load 500000N and 100000N and Compare the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life under both the loads
Problem 2: Implement a User defined result and calculate the Total Deformation from this result and check if it is the same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000 N.
Geometry
The geometry is been imported in deign module
Material
Structural Steel is been used for all 3 Components
Contact
There Two Contact in this assembly
- Rail To Wheel
Type :Frictional
Friction coefficient:0.3
Formulation : Program Control
- Wheel To shaft
Type :Frictionless
Formulation : Program Control
Joints
- Fixed to Ground to Rail
- Translational - Ground To shaft Along x direction
- Planar - Ground To wheel
Mesh
Mesh size :50mm
Element type: Tet10 (default)
Face sizing is done for the contact region of rail and wheel because that were most stress will be acting on
Face sizing :35mm
Boundary Condition
- Joint Displacement
Displacement is given to the shaft along x axis for 500mm
tabular data
Case1
Bearing load is acted where the shaft and wheel are in contact
load is applied in -yaxis
Bearing Load =500000N
Case2
Bearing load is acted where the shaft and wheel are in contact
load is applied in -yaxis
Bearing Load =100000N
Post Processing
- Total Deformation
- Equivalent von Mises Stress
- Equivalent Elastic Strain
- Contact Pressure On Rail & Wheel
- Contact Pressure On Shaft & Wheel
- Life
- User Define deformation
- Solution Output
CASE1: Load 500000N
- Total deformation(1001.2mm)
- Equivalent von Mises Stress(368.2MPa)
- Equivalent Elastic Strain(0.0023659)
- Contact Pressure On Rail & Wheel(543.32MPa)
- Contact Pressure On Shatf & Wheel(17.567Mpa)
Life
CASE2: Load 100000N
Total Deformation(1001.2mm)
- Equivalent von Mises Stress(81.99MPa)
Equivalent Elastic Strain(0.00054076)
- Contact Pressure On Rail & Wheel(148.31MPa)
- Contact Pressure On Shaft & Wheel(5.7817MPa)
Life
User Define -Deformation(1001.2mm
Expression = sqrt(UX^2+UY^2+UZ^2)
- CONCLUSION
- Total deformation is similar in both load
- The equivalent stress for 50000N is 4.5 times the equivalent stress for 100000N bearing load
- As the Bearing load is more for case1 the contact pressure on rail & wheel and Shaft & wheel is 3.5 time the contact pressure for case 2
- Because of larger maximum stress in case 1 the minimum life cycle has become lesser compare to case 1
- User define deformation is as same as the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000.
