Static structural analysis on a plate with a hole geometry using Ansys workbench
Objective:
To design plates ,one with single hole at the centre and another with multiple holes as given in the problem statement and analyse for stress concentration and total deformation in the plates.
Case 1:Plate with single hole
Plate dimensions:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Procedure:
1.Ansys workbench is opened.
2.In the analysis system tool box,Static structural is double clicked and opened in the project schematic window.
3.By default,the Engineering data tab is loaded with Structural steel ,required for the analysis.
4.The given problem geometry is designed using Design Modeler and the units are changed to mm.
5.In design modeler,initially a rectangle and a circle at the centre of the rectangle is constructed with the given dimensions in the xy plane and the sketch is generated.
6.Using concept option in the toolbar,select Surfaces from sketches.
7.The sketch in xy plane is selected and a surface is generated.
8.Then using extrude option,the surface is selected and extruded upto 30mm in z direction.
9.Close the design modeler tab and double click on Model tab for meshing.
10.In Model tab,the surface component present in the geometry tree is suppressed.
11.In mesh,the element size is mentioned as 5mm and the method is chosen as Tetrahedron.
12.In analysis systems,boundary conditions are specified.
13.Fixed support is given in the left face of the plate and a force of 500N is specified in the right face in the positive x direction.
14.In solution,Equivalent stress and Total deformation are requested for solving.
15.Click on solve.
16.The problem is solved and the results are obtained.
Total deformation
Equivalent stress
Results:
1.The maximum deformation in the model is 2.749e-04mm.
2.The maximum stress developed in the model is 0.597 MPa.
Case 2:Plate with multiple holes
Plate dimensions:
Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm
Smaller holes 90mm away from the center:
Diameter=30mm
5.In design modeler,initially a rectangle and a circle at the centre of the rectangle with the given dimensions and another two circles with diameter 30mm are constructed 90mm away from the centre in the xy plane and the sketch is generated.

14.In solution,Equivalent stress and Total deformation are requested for solving.
15.Click on solve.
16.The problem is solved and the results are obtained.
Total deformation
Equivalent stress
Results:
1.The maximum deformation in the model is 2.9727 e-04 mm.
2.The maximum stress developed in the model is 0.5748 MPa.
Table:
|
Case |
Max. Stress |
Max. deformation |
|
1 |
0.597 MPa |
2.749e-04mm |
|
2 |
0.5748 MPa |
2.9727 e-04 mm |
Conclusion:
From the results obtained,it is concluded that the total maximum deformation in the plate with multiple holes is higher than that of the plate with a single hole and maximum stress in the plate with single hole is higher than that of the plate with multiple nodes.
Thus,from analysis point of view,I would recommend plate with multiple holes as it develops lesser stress than the plate with single hole.
From manufacturing point of view,I woud recommend plate with single hole as it is easy for manufacturing plate with one hole rather than drilling multiple holes in the plate.
