Static structural analysis on a plate with a hole geometry

OBJECTIVE:

To perform Static structural analysis on a plate with a hole geometry and to determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model:

Case 1: Plate with a hole.

Case 2: Plate with multiple holes.

CASE 1:

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

smaller holes 90mm away from the center:

Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

MODEL:

MESHING:

MATERIAL USED: STRUCTURAL STEEL

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:

RESULTS:

  • VON MISES STRESS:
  • TOTAL DEFORMATION:

CASE 2:

MODEL:

MESHING:

MATERIAL USED: STRUCTURAL STEEL

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:

RESULTS:

  • VON MISES STRESS:
  • TOTAL DEFORMATION:

COMPARISON BETWEEN CASE 1 AND CASE 2:

FOR CASE 1:

  • Total deformation:
    • maximum=0.0002443mm.
    • minimum=0mm
  • Equivalent Stress:
    • maximum=0.60588 MPa.
    • minimum=0.0085877 MPa

FOR CASE 2:

  • Total deformation:
    • maximum=0.00029728mm.
    • minimum=0mm
  • Equivalent Stress:
    • maximum=0.58175 MPa.
    • minimum=0.00089573 MPa

CONCLUSION:

  • The total deformation is higher for case 2 since it has multiple holes (reduced material). The total deformation increases with the removal of material.
  • The Equivalent stress is lower in case 2. Adding 2 more holes helped in reducing the von mises stress.
  • A stress concentration is defined as a high localized stress, compared to the average stress of the body, and is typically found in a region that has an abrupt geometric change.
  • From an analysis standpoint, the design of case 2 is preferred over case 1 because it has better uniformity in stress distribution and has a lower value of equivalent stress. The deformation is only a little higher than case 1 but the material is reduced and hence its cost and mass are also reduced.
  • From a manufacturing standpoint, the design of case 1 is preferred over case 2 because it requires less machining processes, quality inspections, manufacturing time and it is also has the higher strength to resist total deformation.
