Static Structural Analysis to Simulate a Sphere Pressing on a plate
OBJECTIVE:
To perform static structural analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.
- Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non-Linear.
- Press the sphere onto the plate 4mm downwards and retract it.
- Capture the plastic deformation.

A displacement of 4 mm is defined on the sphere and the plate is kept fixed.

- EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN:
- EQUIVALENT STRESS:
- EQUIVALENT ELASTIC STRAIN ON THE PLATE:
- EQUIVALENT PLASTIC STRAIN ON THE PLATE:
- EQUIVALENT STRESS ON THE PLATE:
RECORDED PLASTIC DEFORMATION:
CONCLUSION:
From the analysis, it is clear that the plate has undergone plastic deformation.
The maximum value for deformation is 4 mm, hence it is sure that the sphere has been displaced by 4mm.
The maximum value of deformation recorded in the plate is 3.4947mm. Since the plate did not return to its original shape, it has taken a plastic deformation.
The maximum induced stress in the plate is 3318.2MPa and the maximum strain is 0.0165mm/mm. The value for maximum plastic strain is 1.7 mm/mm
