Spur Gear Challenge-Compare the results obtained by using 3 different materials for gears
Objective 1:
- Case 1:
Using Cast Iron(ductile) as a material, carry out a static structural analysis to find out Equivalent stress, Total deformation and Stress intensity(Learn about what stress intensity is). Find location for possible fracture
Total deformation: it will be same in all the three cases
Stress:
Strain:
- Case 2:
Using Cast Steel as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1
properties of cast steel:
Stress:
Strain:
- Case 3:
Using Cast Bronze as material, perform the same analysis for the results as in Case 1.
properties of cast bronze:
Stress:
Strain:
Objective 2:
Write a detailed report comparing the results of the three cases and conclude which material would you recommend based on these results.
Comparing the three results we can observe that the total deformation i.e. 30mm in all the cases is same and the point of contact that bears the maximum force is the point of fracture.
looking at the stress values for all the three cases we can determine the best material for the gears:
maximum stress for Cast Iron(ductile)- 298.49MPa
maximum stress for Cast Steel- 294.31
maximum stress for cast bronze- 315.65
the material which gives the least stress will be the best suited one i.e. Cast steel.
