Objective 2:

Analysis of spur gears using different materials:

Materials Used:

In this analysis we used Ductile Cat Iron, Cast Steel and Bronze Cast. The materials are selected from engineering data available in the software.

Analysis Procedure:

The analysis of spur gear is carried out with each of those materials and stress and deformation values are analyzed. We used revolute joints connected to ground from gear for both gears. The input given for left gear is revolution upto 180 degrees. Momentum is given as an input upto 70 N-mm for the right gear. This entire procedure is carried in 6 steps by applying 30 degrees to left gear and 10N-mm moment on right gear. Mesh used is default mesh given by software. Stress intensity and total deformation values are evaluated

Results:

Material

Total Deformation max.

Stress Intensity max.

Ductile Cast Iron

30 mm

268.48 MPa

Cast Steel

30 mm

317.13 Mpa

Cast bronze

30 mm

123.78 MPa

Conclusion:

From the results obtained, the deformation values of all 3 materials are same but the stress intensity values varies. It is known that the high stresses causes fractures which means the material with less stress values of same applications is best pick to use for that application. The position in which the stress is maximum has better chance for failure. Here, CAST BRONZE gives less stress intensity value for the same load application and it is best suited for this application.
