Side car crash analysis

Objective: To perform crash analysis on Chrysler Neon side model.

Procedure:

  • The unit system used for this analysis was [Kg mm ms]
  • A cylindrical rigid wall was created along the z-axis at the side of the car. The input parameters given are as follows:
    • Slide=2
    • Dsearch=1000
    • Fric=0.1
    • Diameter=254
  • A self contact interface was created by setting the entire model as both master and slave. The properties used are as follows:
    • Istif=4
    • Igap=3
    • Stmin=1
    • Gap_min=0.5
    • Inacti=6
    • Fric=0.2
    • Iform=2
    • Idel=2
    • Fscale_gap=0.8
  • Mass was added to the system such that the total mass was 700kg and the COG position matches with the fullscale model.
  • An initial velocity of 15.64 m/s in y-direction was given to the entire model.
  • Cross-sections were created on cross members for checking sectional forces.
  • Nodes were added in TH to check intrusions in the B pillar, hinge pillar and fuel tank region.
  • A node was added in TH to check the peak velocity of the door.

Results:

  • Due to the initial velocity given to the model high kinetic energy can be observed at the beginning. As the crash progresses, the impact due to crash is stored in the BIW in the form of internal energy. Thus, a steady decline in kinetic energy and a gradual increase in internal energy can be seen in the above graph. A gradual increase in contact energy can also be seen when the crash progresses as more elements come into contact with each other. The mass error value was found to be 0.74% and the energy error value was -2.6%.

  • The above graph shows the cross-sectional forces on the seat reinforcement cross-member. The highest force value was observed at 75ms and the value was 9.5kN.

  • The above graph shows the cross-sectional forces on rail cross-member. The highest force value was observed at 28ms and the value was 17.5kN.

  • The above diagram shows the intrusion at the hinge pillar. The value of intrusion was found to be 700mm.

  • The above diagram shows the intrusion of the B-pillar. The value of intrusion was found to be 275mm.

  • The above diagram shows the intrusion at the fuel tank. The value of intrusion was found to be 265mm.

  • The above diagram shows the velocity of the door. The peak velocity observed was 16m/s at 8ms.

Conclusion:

The side crash simulation of the Neon Chrysler model was successfully performed by giving the appropriate input conditions. The results obtained in the simulation are summarised below:

  • Max section force on seat reinforcement cross-member........... = 9.5kN
  • Max section force on rail cross-member................................. = 17.5kN
  • The intrusion at hinge pillar................................................. = 700mm
  • The intrusion at B-pillar....................................................... = 275mm
  • The intrusion at fuel tank.................................................... = 265mm
  • Max velocity of the door...................................................... = 16m/s
