Section Modulus calculation and optimization

SECTION MODULUS OF HOOD :

Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the section modulus using the formula S = I/y

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the nuteral axis and the extreme end of the object

Come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section and mention what change you made that has increased the strength.

Consider Stainless steel AISI 302 – cold-rolled – y = 520 MPa

Case 1:

First the section modulus of Hood is calculated with less hood embosses and result to be followed below

\"\"

The inertia value was 1.84*10^4 mm^4.

the section modulus was S=I/Y

=1.84*e4/417.84

=44.12mm^3.

Case 2 :

The embosses of hood was increased and results as follows

\"\"

The inertia value was 5.125*10^6mm^4

the section modulus was S=I/Y

=5.125e6/417

=12290mm^3.

The results are tabulated below

\"\"

Thus increasing embosses and drawing deep increases strength of section, and moment of inertia.
