Project

Section Modulus calculation and optimization

Aim:

To calculate the section modulus of my hood design and carry on optimization by altering the design

Requirement:

Come up with a new section that has improved the section modulus of the previous section using Siemens Nx 12

Theory

Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.For general design, the elastic section modulus is used, applying up to the yield point for most metals and other common materials.he elastic section modulus is defined as S = I / y, where I is the second moment of inertia (or area moment of inertia).

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

Y = distance between the nuteral axis and the extreme end of the object

Content

Section 1:

This section was directly taken from the hood model which was designed.

I= 4627044.185mm^4

y=438mm

S=I/Y= 10564.027 mm^3

Section 2:

This has an improved moment of inertia.

Things that were done are

1. Outer panel was offset by 2mm

2. Extra embosses were added.

I= 4770687.256mm^4

y=438mm

S=I/Y=10891.9800 mm^3

Scope:

In order to facilitate the present design criterions the scope of altering the design had become very limited. We can suggest the styling team to improve the curvature of the outerpanel in order to sustain high amount of offset values and in turn increase the section modulus of the component.

Conclusion:

Improved section modulus denotes the nature of the component\'s restrictive nature towards bending. Hence, it can be concluded that the mechanical behaviour of section 2 proves to be better than that of section 1.
