STRESS CONCENTRATION COMPARISON OF PLATE WITH SINGLE HOLE AND MULTI HOLE

As per requirement we have made a plate with following dimensions in ANSYS SPACE CLAIM.

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

and additional two holes with 30mm dia.

a

dBoth the materials are assigned with Structural Steel.

Here as directed, we meshed with tetrahedron method with size of 10mm,(considering limitation in academic versions), the generated mesh seems to be fine size.

Then the left side is fixed in both and load (pulling force-tensile force) applied at right end.

then load of 500N is applied ,considering the co-ordinates in components. (in the below image the load applied is shown for 3000N but the results are compiled for load of 500N)

Then the equivalent vonmises stress and total deformation results are generated, the results are ,

S.no Description Single-hole Multi-hole

1 Total deformation(in mm) 2.74*10-4 2.96*10-4

2 Stress (In MPa) 0.575 0.568

upon comparing the results the total deformation in plate with single hole is less when compared with multi hole. and the stress concentration is less in plate with multi hole.

in analysis point of view the plate with multihole can be selected as maximum stress induced is less ,though the total deformation value is high, it is negligble.

in manufacturing point of view, plate with single hole can be selected as the manufacturing cycle time, cost, material wastage is less.

also attaching the deformation video of plate with singe and multihole for reference.
