Rankine Cycle

INTRODUCTION

A simple steam plant working on a Rankine Cycle consists of a boiler, turbine, condenser and a feed pump. For any process in the vapour cycle, it is possible to assume a ideal process when performs the basic intended operation and involves no extraneous effects. For steam boiler, this ideal process would be a reversible constant pressure heating process of water to form steam, for turbine it would be a reversible adiabatic expansion of steam, for the condenser it would be reversible constant pressure heat rejection as the steam condenses till it becomes saturated liquid and for the pump the ideal process would be the reversible adiabatic compression of this liquid ending at the initial pressure. When all these processes are ideal, the cycle is called Rankine Cycle.

There are four processes in a typical Rankine cycle.

  • Process 1–2(Reversible adiabatic compression): The working fluid is pumped from low to high pressure. As the fluid is a liquid at this stage, the pump requires little input energy.
  • Process 2–3(Reversible constant volume heat addition): The high-pressure liquid enters a boiler, where it is heated at constant pressure by an external heat source to become a dry saturated vapour. The input energy required can be easily calculated graphically, using an enthalpy–entropy chart (h–s chart, or Mollier diagram), or numerically, using steam tables.
  • Process 3–4(Reversible adiabatic expansion): The dry saturated vapour expands through a turbine, generating power. This decreases the temperature and pressure of the vapour, and some condensation may occur. The output in this process can be easily calculated using the chart or tables noted above.
  • Process 4–1(Reversible constant volume heat rejection): The wet vapour then enters a condenser, where it is condensed at a constant pressure to become a saturated liquid.

Objective:

  • To calculate the state points of the Rankine Cycle based on the given inputs.

  • To plot the corresponding T-s and h-s plots for the given set of inputs.
