Rail wheel and Track Simulation for Static structural Analysis
Objective - Perform a static structural analysis on a Railwheel and Track setup with two different loads and compare stress strain deformation and Life for the two cases.
Loads - 100000 for case 1 and 500000 N for Case 2
Solution - For this simulation we first open the work Bench add static structural and since we are using the structural steel for this we dont need to add any materials.
Material Properties
Young\'s Modulus 2e+05 MPa
Poisson\'s Ratio 0.3
Bulk Modulus 1.6667e+05 MPa
Shear Modulus 76923 MPa
Tensile Ultimate Strength 460 MPa
Tensile Yield Strength 250 MPa
Now we import the geometry and check for any discontunity in it.
Now we update the model in mechanical module and open it to set up the loads.
First we change the name of the components.
In connection we create contacts between wheel and the rail.
Set Up -
contacts
Joints
For the rail we give a fixed joint support. For the wheel we gice a planer joint and for the wheel shaft we translational joint.
Mesh
For the contacting surfaces we keep 35 mm mesh size and for the rest we use 50 mm mesh size.
number of Elements in mesh
Displacement of shaft id 200 mm in x direction.

Comparison Table

(Max) (max) (max)
case 1 95.648 0.00061215 999.02
Case 2 388.34 0.0024931 999.08
Case 2 is 5 times multiplied load of Case 1 thus the increase in stress Strain and Deformation.
COntact pressure also increases as the load is multiplied by 5 times.
Case 1
Contact Pressure 1- 178.21 Mpa
Contact Pressure 2- 5.573 Mpa
Case 2
Contact Pressure 1- 609.42Mpa
Contact Pressure 2- 23.135Mpa
Life cycle for each case. we see there is a considerable decrease in the life when the load is increased by 5 times.
Case 1 - 5.4946e5
Case 2 - 2963
User Defined Results for Deformation
case 1
Case 2
Deformation for User defined expression and the Ansys Solver is the same.
User defined expression for the Deformation is given as sqrt(UX^2 + UY^2 + UZ^2) which we can get from Ansys Help.
If we compare the deformation of case 1 of Ansys solver and User defined expression there is no difference at all. similarly for the case 2 results are identical.

Contact Pressure - https://youtu.be/bbBCJk1PFHU
Conclusion -
Values of Deformation remains the same for both the cases evenif the load is incresed 5 times.
But there is a high rise in the values of Stress and Strain of the entire set up.
