Poojan Patel :- Simulation of Compound Pendulum.
Challenge :-
Simulate a compound pendulum in the XY plane, dropped from an initial height and functioning under the influence of gravity.
Data :-
Body type = Cylinders
Diameter = 2 m
Point_0 = 0, 0, 0
Point_1 = -10, -10, 0
Point_2 = -24.142, -10, 0
Gravity in Y-axis = -9.81 m/s2
Time = 100 sec
Units = Meter and Kilogram
Answer :-
1)
Steps :-
- Change the units from Model – Data Sets – Solver Units. In that change Length to Meters.
- Apply Gravity in Y-direction from Model – Data Sets – Solver Gravity.
- Create 3 points by right click on Point button on toolbar i.e. Point_0 (0, 0, 0), Point_1 (-10, -10, 0) and Point_2 (-24.142, -10, 0).
- Create two bodies by click on Body button on toolbar i.e. Body_0 and Body_1.
- Create two cylinder graphics by right click on the Graphic button on the toolbar. For the first cylinder give the body as Body_0, origin as Point_0 and direction as Point_1. For cylinder two give the body as Body_1, origin as Point_1 and direction as Point_2. The radius of both cylinders is 1 m.
- For both bodies select ‘Get Properties from associated Graphic(s)’ option.
- Then create two joints by right click on Joint button on the toolbar. For Joint_0 in the connectivity select Revolute Joint and associate Body 1 as Body_0, Body 2 as Ground body, Origin point as Point_0 and in direction select vector as associate it with Global Z vector. Similarly, for Joint_1 in connectivity select Revolute Joint and associate Body 1 as Body_0, Body 2 as Body_1, Origin point as Point_1 and in direction select vector as associate it with Global Z vector.
- Lastly, create two outputs by right click on the Output button. For the Output_0 in the properties select Displacement and Two points. Body 1 as Body_1 and Body 2 as Ground body. Pt on Body 1 as Point_2 and Pt on Body 2 as Global Origin. Then for Output_1 in the properties select Force and Entity. Select the Body as Body_0 and Ref Maker as Global frame.
- Then click on Run Solver in the toolbar. Save the model, simulation type Transient and end time as 100 sec. Then in the Menu bar – Tools – Check model, see the general properties, DOF of the model. Then Run the model for simulation.

Plotting :-
- Plot the trace of point Point_2 (trace is the Y vs X displacement plot of Point_2 w.r.t the ground).
