Performed Explicit Analysis of Machining with Planar work piece using ANSYS workbench

Objective: Perform an Explicit dynamics simulation of the machining operation with using a planer and observe their behaviour at 2 different velocities and find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation and also insert a User defined result to calculate the temperature of the body.

Pre-processing Setup:

Geometry:

Cutting tool is kept as Rigid as we have main focus on Planar only

Planar is kept flexible with Steel 1006 as material

Materials:

For cutting tool Structural steel is used while for planar Steel 1006 is used.

Connections:

No contact is use in Explicit analysis . It depends mainly on Body Interactions

Mesh:

For cutting tool, Method is used with elements as Tetrahedrons. While for planar four edge sizing is used with 10 division

Analysis Settings:

End time of 7.5e-4 sec is given

Fixed support:

Velocity:

Velocity of 20000 mm/s and 15000 mm/s is given for two cases

Post-processing results:

Case 1 : Velocity 20000 mm/s

Total deformation at 7.5e-4 sec:

Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 29.259 mm

Equivalent stress at 7.5e-4 sec:

Min. value = 1.2546 MPa , Max. value = 491.94 MPa

User defined Temperature :

Case 2 : Velocity 15000 mm/s

Total deformation at 7.5e-4 sec:

Min. value = 0 mm , Max. value = 23.176 mm

Equivalent stress at 7.5e-4 sec:

Min. value = 1.428 MPa , Max. value = 634.29 MPa

User defined Temperature :

Conclusion:

Comparing results for both cases :

Velocity mm/s

Total deformation in mm

Equivalent stress in MPa

Temperature in degree centigrade

From above table, we can observe that:

  • Total deformation is maximum in case 1 with velocity of 20000 mm/s.
  • Equivalent stress having Minimum and Maximum value higher in Case 2
  • Temperature is maximum in Case 1 20000 mm/s as it is travelling with higher velocity and will cut the workpiece with more temperature as compared to Case 2 15000 mm/s
