Meshing of hood
Objective: To mesh the hood of a car according to the quality criteria given
Procedure:
- A new Opti struct file was opened in Hypermesh, hood geometry was imported, all the solids were deleted from the component.
- Separate mid surfaces were created for all the components, the mid surfaces were checked for defects and geometry clean up was done
- First 2D meshing was done on the smaller parts latch and both hinges, re-meshing was done on the parts where ever it was required.
- The outer panel of hood is symmetric part so it was dived into to equal halves using split surface by node, one half of the outer panel is meshed part by part by dividing the whole surface into parts which are almost rectangle as Hypermesh creates better mesh when given rectangular geometry, the whole mesh was reflected to the other side of the outer panel using reflect option from tools window.
- The inner panel is also symmetric component so it was also divided into two parts one part was meshed with 2D elements according to the criteria and the whole mesh was reflected to the other side of the panel using reflect option. The part was checked for the element failures and re-meshing was done where ever necessary.
- checked for the quality criteria and modified according to the criteria.
| S.N | Quality Criteria | Value |
| 1 | Aspect Ratio | 5 |
| 2 | Skewness | 45 |
| 3 | Warping | 15 |
| 4 | Taper | 0.5 |
| 5 | Min. Length | 2mm |
| 6 | Max. Length | 8mm |
| 7 | Min angle Quad | 45 |
| 8 | Max angle Quad | 135 |
| 9 | Min angle Tria | 20 |
| 10 | Max angle Tria | 120 |
| 10 | Tria % | 10 |
Results:
2D mesh of the latch
2D mesh of the left and right hinge
2D mesh of outer panel of the hood
2D mesh of inner panel of the hood
All meshed components
Conclusion
By completing the challenge, gained knowledge about 2D meshing sheet metal components.
