Meshing of an interior plastic component of a side door

MESHING OF AN INTERIOR PLASTIC COMPONENT OF A SIDE DOOR

OBJECTIVE:-

  • To clean the topo errors of the model.
  • To perform mid surface extraction in 2 ways:- Automatic extraction and manual method.
  • To compare the the 2 methods and state the most favourable method.

PROCEDURE:-

  • In case of Automatic extraction method, the model was first imported into the ANSA Database which was translated into ANSA readable format.
  • We performed the geometry check, which was fixed one by one, until the model was free off errors.
  • Before starting our main process, the values in Quality Criteria was changed as per the required. Length of the element=4mm.
  • Later on the Casting option was selected under Mid-Surface Option to extract the mid surface with the length of element of 4mm.
  • Mid-surface was extracted and then possile corrections were made to made the extracted surface look better and comforting.
  • The very surface was assigned under a new PID.
  • The next step performed was assigning the thickness using the option Calculate Thickness under the option Mid-Surface.
  • The file was saved under the name Door_AutoMethod.ansa.
  • Now in the case for Manual method, the very same error free model was taken.
  • Mid-surface was extracted individually from every faces one by one using the option Offset.
  • After every faces had been extracted, the mid surface was isolated using the option !NOT, and then was Lock down and the lock was stored.
  • Geometry check was run and the possible errors were fixed.
  • The very error free surface was then assigned under a different PID.
  • Now the extracted mid surface\'s length was then changed to 4mm, using the option LENGTH under PERIMETER.
  • Then FREE MESH was performed, and the result\'s lock was stored under a different name.
  • Now to seperate the FE from the model, RELEASE option was used under ELEMENTS option.
  • The very FE mode was saved under differen PID and was also stored under different lock mode.
  • The file was then saved under the name Door_ManualMethod.ansa.
  • Now both the PIDs of auto method and manual method was shown, where we could possibly see the uneven matches of a few areas.
  • It was then stored under different lock mode.
  • The very file was then saved under the name Door_HybridMethod.ansa.

RESULTS:-

CONCLUSIONS:-

  • Under the hybrid method, it clearly shows that we get more refined and better result if done automatically. Whereas in manual method, even if the user tries his best to produce the mid-surface by he ultimately needs to work more after the extraction is done, like joining faces. Which if done automatically, ANSA does it much accurately and hence saves time. In case of the mirror parts, ANSA overlooks the fact that those are the mirror parts, as the ANSA runs the algorithm individually. Though in the case of this side door, the automatic extraction was much preferred over the manual method.
  • Topo errors were fixed.
  • Mid-surface extraction was successful done.
  • Thickness was assigned.
