Introduction

MODULES OF GT SUITE:

  • GT-Power is a powerful 1D/3D multi-physics CAE system simulation software. It supplies a comprehensive set of component libraries which simulate the physics of fluid flow, thermal, mechanical, electrical and controls. From those libraries, one can build accurate models of almost any engineering system, including vehicles, engines, drivelines, transmissions, general powertrains and mechanical systems, hydraulics, lubrication and friction, thermal management, cooling, chemistry, aftertreatment and much more.
  • GEM3D is a tool that can be used to build 3D models of flow, thermal, and mechanical systems that can be discretized and made into model files for use with GT-SUITE. It provides the ability to build the model in a 3D environment so that the full details of the model can be included. It also includes sophisticated discretization logic that is able to transform the 3D model into a model file that is compatible with the GT-SUITE software.
  • GT-SpaceClaim is used to aid the user in converting from their existing CAD formats to a format and geometry that can be read by the other GT-SUITE preprocessing tools like GEM3D . These steps include file conversions, extracting the flow volume from an existing CAD file, simplifying flow geometry, and building up a solid model using basic shapes.
  • CONVERGE Lite is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program that
eliminates the grid generation bottleneck from the simulation process and can perform seamless calculations with any number of species and chemical reactions, as well as transient liquid sprays and laminar or turbulent flows.
  • VTDESIGN stands for Valve Train Design tool, is a graphical preprocessing tool for valvetrain and cam design.

The GUI of GT-Suite uses a Windows based platform making it very user-friendly and efficient for a user to test/control and run models.

The extensions of project models in GT-Power uses a .gtm extension which stands for GT Project map.

It includes a range of pre-built models that can be callibrated and simulated as per the need.

  • FLOW :

1) COMPONENTS :

(i) EndEnvironment : This template describes the boundary condition and composition of pressure and temperature.

(ii) PipeRound : This template can be substituted in the cases where one has to account for a cross-section or pipe bend.

(iii) Piston Cylinder : Models variable volume of piston machine

2) CONNECTIONS :

(i) OrificeConn : This template models an orifice to calculate the mass flow rate using diameter, area and discharge coefficients as inputs.

(ii) ValveCheckConn : Models a dynamic check valve for FSI applications

3) REFERENCES : These includes templates such as Engine cylinder geometry,Heat transfer,Incylinder surface temperature,Flow control,FluidInitialState which calculates the initial temperature and pressure variables,Wallthermal Boundary which determines the external boundary conditions of pipe wall etc,.

  • MECHANICAL

1) COMPONENTS :

(i) EngineCrankTrain : This template is used to model the kinematics and rigid dynamics of common reciprocating IC engine cranktrain configurations.

(ii) Torque : This template can be used to apply a torque to rotational mechanical parts.

2) CONNECTIONS :

(i) GearConn : This template relates the 1-D rotational motion (angular velocity) of one body to that of another.

3) REFERENCES : These include templates such as EngCrankSlider for determining the inertia of the slider crank mechanism,ODEControlExplicit which is used for the defining time step solution control parameters etc,.

PROBLEM :

  • INLET BOUNDARY CONDITION :

TEMPLATE USED : EndFlowInlet : This template represents a boundary condition that imposes flow through a specified mass flow rate, volume flow rate, velocity, or mass flux. Positive values for flow rate indicate that flow is out of the \'EndFlowInlet\' part and into the system. Negative values indicate the flow is into the EndFlowInlet and out of the system.

  • TEMPLATE USED : PipeRound : This template models a pipe with a round cross-section and an optional bend. Data entered to describe the bend will be used to automatically calculate the pressure loss coefficients that account for the associated head losses.

  • TEMPLATE USED : PipeRound
  • OUTLET BOUNDARY CONDITION :

  • TEMPLATE USED : EndEnvironment : This template describes boundary conditions of pressure, temperature, and fluid properties. There are options to include effects of altitude and humidity.

RESULTS POST PROCESSED WITH GTPOST:

Net Heat Transfer at CAC : -83.3 KW

Pressure Drop at CAC : 0.115 bar
