Frontal crash Analysis of Neon Car
Frontal crash Analysis of Neon Car
objective:
- Analyze the frontal crash analysis of neon and determination of sectional forces on the shotgun, A-pillar, axial forces on the bumper, intrusions, and velocity at critical areas.
Methodology :
- The frontal model of Neon with mesh has been set ready for analysis. Before going to analysis the model has been checked for errors and rectified.
- The model is checked against penetrations and intersections.
- An infinite plane rigid wall is created at the front side of the car
- with Dsearch=1000
- and Fric=0.1
- New type-7 interface between bumper and rails and another type 7 interface for the whole body is created with the following properties.
- An initial velocity of 35 mph i.e, 15.56 mm/ms has been applied to the car in the global X-axis against the wall for the crash scene.
- The model is balanced for the real car weight of 700kg with proper center of gravity by distributing ADMAS among components.
- Timestep for DT/NODA, DT/BRICK, DT/INTER has been set with the following parameters.
- Run time of 80ms has been set for simulation.
Output Requests:
- For finding Sectional forces at node174247 and intrusions on the dash wall at nodes 66695,66244. These nodes are added to output blocks.
- Random nodes are picked on the shotgun, headlight bracket, rail, hinge pillar, A-pillar on the left and right sections and added to output block to know their behavior.
- cross-sections are created on shotgun and A-pillar to know the sectional forces during simulations and added to output blocks
- To find the acceleration on rocker arm a random point is picked and an accelerometer is placed on the point and these accelerometers are added to output blocks.
Results:
Sectional forces on Shotgun:
- The above graph shows sectional forces on shotgun on the left and right sections of the car.
- From the graph, there is a peak in the left shotgun at 35.5ms of magnitude 21.8KN
- The maximum value of force has been recorded on right section at 21ms of magnitude11.46KN
- It clearly shows that the forces are very high in the left section.
Sectional forces on Rails:
- The above graph shows sectional forces on rails on the right and left section of the car.
- From the graph there are high values on the right section of the 13ms of magnitude 30.08KN
- The right rail is receiving high forces in the above case.
Sectional forces on A-pillar:
- The above graph shows sectional forces on A-pillar.
- The forces on A-pillar are fluctuating nature from the graph.
- The forces are also low compared to shotgun and rails.
- Maximum values are observed at the end of simulation on the left section and middle of simulation on the right section.
Axial forces on bumper:
- The above graph shows axial forces on rails from the bumper.
- Forces are high at the beginning and decreased gradually and increased at the end.
- It shows that the parts are subjected to high forces from beginning.when the car strikes the wall and when the crash happened it decreases gradually and the end due to self impact there is the hike in the force.
- The maximum value is observed at 10ms of magnitude 13.5KN.
Intrusions on dash wall:
- Intrusions of the dash wall are plotted above.
- The distance between the pair of nodes(66695-121751),(66244-122048) is the intrusion of node 66695 and 66244.
- Initially, the first set of nodes (66695-121751) is at a distance of 781.8mm and the end of 627.8mm. So, a 153.9mm intrusion happened.
- Similarly, for the second set of nodes(66244-122048) initial distance is 741.03mm at end 600.8mm. So,140.5 mm intrusion happened.
- Intrusion decides the safety of the occupant in the car, minimum the intrusion maximum the safety of the occupant.
Acceleration of Rocker arm nodes:
- Acceleration of nodes on the rocker arm is plotted above.
- In the beginning, acceleration is high due to impact and gradually it decreased and maintained constant through the rest.
Energies:
- Internal, kinetic, hourglass and total energy of the system have been plotted above.
- Internal energy is of increasing nature due to the absorption of energy by the system during impact.
- Kinetic energy is of decreasing nature due to the decreasing velocity against the resistance offered by the system.
- Hourglass energy is not registered due to the use of optimized element type QEPH for shell elements and HEPH for 3D elements.
- The maximum Internal energy absorption is 36802.03 KJ and the minimum kinetic energy is 44976.51KJ.
- More the absorption of internal energy, the less the deformation of the element and the more the safety of the model.
Conclusion:
- More deformation on the left side of the vehicle has been observed from the above results.
- Sectional forces on the high on rails and second-highest on the shotgun and comparatively low on A-pillar. This implies that maximum forces have been transferred to rails and shotgun during impact.
- Hence, more robustness of the rails and bumper keeps occupants safe inside the car.
