Finite Element Analysis of Buckle - Clip using Ansys Workbench
Objective: Compare the Finite Element Analysis results obtained by using 2 different conditions for Buckle-clip and write a detailed report explaining the results obtained.
Question:
Mesh the buckle clip model in such a way that the overall number of elements is less than 31,000. It is mandatory to bring it under 31K.
Simulate the component for both kinds of motion
- Moving the buckle by keeping the clip fixed
- Moving the clip by keeping the buckle fixed.
If one of the motion is not converging, explain why that particular motion when simulated did not converge.
Results and Deliverables
- Stress generated at the base of the clip
- Contact pressure generated between the outer clip surface and buckle surface
- Total deformation of the clip
Case Setup and Execution:
Model:
Boundary Conditions:
Material: POM
Contacts: Contacts has been applied as shown below.
Mesh: Size of element- 4.4mm.
Face Sizing is applied to the contact faces with size of element - 1mm.
Analysis Settings:
Case-1: Moving the buckle by keeping the clip fixed.
Fixed Support: Fixed Support has been applied to the clip as shown below.
Displacement: Displacement has been applied to the buckle in +ve Z-axis direction as shown below.
Results:
Equivalent Stress of the clip:
Contact pressure generated between the outer clip surface and buckle surface:
Total deformation of the clip:
Case-2: Moving the clip by keeping the buckle fixed.
Fixed Support: Fixed Support has been applied to the buckle as shown below.
Displacement: Displacement has been applied to the clip in -ve Z-axis direction as shown below.
Results:
Equivalent Stress of the clip:
Contact pressure generated between the outer clip surface and buckle surface:
Total deformation of the clip:
Results Comparison & Conclusion:
Results Comparison:
| CASE | Equivalent Stress of the Clip(Mpa) | Total Deformation of the Clip(mm) | Contact Pressure(Mpa) | |||
| Max | Min | Max | Min | Max | Min | |
| 1 | 49.366 | 7.20E-09 | 9.2637 | 0 | 23.661 | 0 |
| 2 | 73.183 | 2.11E-07 | 49.833 | 0.2925 | 26.385 | 0 |
- Total deformation of the clip is higher in case-2 because the clip is moving and the buckle is fixed.
- Equivalent Stress, Contact Pressure is lower in Case-1.
