Explicit Dynamics Analysis of Bullet penetrating a Bucket
AIM :
To perform an explicit dynamics Simulation on a Bullet penetrating into bucket and find out Equivalent Stress and total deformation of the bucket.
Model :
Material Selection and their Properties :
1) ALuminium Alloy NL
2) Copper Alloy NL
3) Stainless Steel NL
4) Tantalum
Procedure :
- Drag and drop Explict Dynamics on workspace. In engineering data select the specified materials. In this case, Aluminium alloy NL, Copper alloy NL, Stainless steel NL are selected as materials for bucket and tantalum is selected as material for bullet.
- Open Spaceclaim and import the geometry. Check for any errors and if not there close the Spaceclaim.
- Open Mechanical Solver and rename the components.
- Delete any contacts available in the model.
- Mesh the model approriately. The element size for the meshing of this component is default and edge sizing is applied to the edges of the bucket.
- In analysis settings, initial time step is 0.01 seconds and energy error is changed to 5.
- Now the bottom face of the bucket is fixed and the bullet is given a velocity of 139 m/s.
- Now for results, apply equivalent stress and Total deformation.
Mesh :
Element size - Default
Edge sizing - 5 mm.
No. of Nodes - 5283
No. of Elements - 13766
Mesh Quality -
Results -
Case I - Aluminium Alloy NL
a) Total deforamtion -
b) Equivalent Stress -
Case II - Copper Alloy NL
a) Total deforamtion -
b) Equivalent Stress -
Case III - Stainless Steel NL
a) Total deforamtion -
b) Equivalent Stress -
Conclusion -
As from the above table, We can see that the deformation is maximum in the Copper alloy NL case followed by Stainless Steel NL and Aluminium alloy NL.
Equivalent Stress is also maximum in copper alloy NL followed by Stainless Steel NL and Aluminium alloy NL.
