Project

Designing and Modelling a Sun-seeker Predator Yacht using SolidWorks

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this project is to design and modelled an a full-fledged Yacht (Sunseeker Predator 108) using solidworks and to assemble the parts and to create a photo realistic render of the Sunseeker Predator Yacht

INTRODUCTION :

A yacht is a watercraft used for pleasure or sports. The term originates from the Duch word jacht (which means "hunt"), and originally referenced light, fast sailing vessels that the Dutch Republic navy used to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. The yacht was popularized by Charles II of England as a pleasure or recreation vessel following his restoration in 1660.

Today's yachts are almost exclusively for leisure. A yacht is any sail or power vessel used for pleasure, cruising, or racing. The word often connotes luxury; however, luxury is not a quality necessary to meet the definition; nor is it always desirable. Many racing yachts are stripped-out vessels with a minimum of accommodations to lower weight. The term 'sailboat' or 'sail yacht' is used in America to differentiate from a 'powerboat' or 'power yacht.' As of December 2018,there were about 6,500 yachts over 24m on the market.

So the purpose of the project is to create a model of an a full-fledged Yacht (Sunseeker Predator 108) using Solidworks.

DESIGN PROCEDURE

All of components are mostly designed and modelled based on blueprints with the help of this we will model each parts using surface commands.

PARTS

  • HULL
  • SUPERS TRUCTURE
  • RADAR
  • RADAR MAST
  • FRONT SEAT
  • REAR SEAT
  • MIDDLE SEAT
  • PROPELLER

HULL

A hull is the watertight body of a ship or boat. The hull may open at the top (such as a dinghy), or it may be fully or partially covered with a deck. Atop the deck may be a deckhouse and other superstructures, such as a funnel, derrick, or mast. The line where the hull meets the water surface is called the waterline. The hull designing require curvature during sketching inorder to avoid bad geomentry shape at modelling.

Commands Used:

Sketch, Extrude boss, Extrude cut, Lofted surface, Trim surface, Extruded surface, Knit surface, Filled surface, Shell, Delete face, Fillet, Dome, Chamfer, Linear pattern, Mirror, Split body, Combine, Project curve, Composite curve, Offset surface.

( Sketch includes commands like line, circle, spline, arc, ellipse, slot, rectangle etc. It also includes various sketch relations like parallel, perpendicular, tangent, equal etc ).

Extrude : It extrude a sketch or selected sketch contours in one or two direction to create a solid features.

Revolve : It revolve a sketch or selected sketch contours with respect to axis to create a solid features.

Extrude cut : It used to remove the 3D model of selected sketch.

Fillet : It used to connect two adjacent faces using a smooth tagent arc.

Chamfer : It used to connect two adjacent faces using an inclined line

Convert entities : Convert a selected model edge entities into current sketch segments.

Linear pattern : Pattern features, faces, bodies in one or two linear direction.

Project curve : This features is used to project a curve onto a face or sketch.

Composite curve : Combine selected edges, curve and sketches into single curve.

Swept boss : This feature is used to sweep a close profile along an open or closed path to create a solid feature.

Knit Surface : This feature is used to joint all surface and made into single body.

Fill Surface : This feature is used to fill the gap area in surface.

Mirror : This allow to mirror the faces or bodies along a face or plane.

Dome : A rounded vault forming the outside face of a body typically with a circular base.

Combine : This feature is to combine two or more bodies together

Split body : This feature is to split bodies.

SUPER STRUCTURE:

A superstructure is an upward extension of an existing structure above a baseline. It consists of the parts of the ship or a boat, including sailboats, fishing boats, passenger ships, and submarines, that project above her main deck. This does not usually include its masts or any armament turrets.

The size of the superstructure has a great influence on the mobility of the vessels. They are designed in a manner, so that, they add value and hinder the speed and mobility in the least. The superstructure is mostly designed in fashion as well. This is because it is the most easily visible part of the ship, in fact it is the identification of the ship, and so the designers try to provide it with the identity that is unique.

This superstructure is design and modelled using surface commands.

Commands used:

Sketch,Offset entites, Convert entities, Swept surface, Ruled surface, Thicken surface, Extrude boss, Extrude cut, Lofted surface, Trim surface, Extruded surface, Knit surface, Filled surface, Shell, Delete face, Fillet, Dome, Chamfer, Linear pattern, Mirror, Split body, Combine, Project curve, Composite curve, Offset surface.

RADAR :

Marine radars are the best collision avoidance system ever developed for the recreational boater. Radar systems helps to see through darkness, fog and stormy weather conditions. Once used only on large vessels, radar units are now compact, draw little electricity and are sized to fit boats as small as 18' in length. Combined with AIS and a modern electronic chartplotter with up-to-date digital charts.

Commands used :

Sketch, Offset entities, Convert entities, Extrude boss, Fillet, Extrude cut, Mirror, Split Line.

RADAR MAST :

The Radar mast supports the radar, antennas, satellite dome and light. It was designed after importing the top surface of the Super structure.

Commands used :

Sketch, offset entities, Extrude Boss, Fillet, Revolved Boss, Swept Boss, Mirror, Project curve, Chamfer, Dome, Shell.

FRONT SEAT :

Front seat was placed in front of super structure on the hull. It was designed after importing the desk surface of the Hull as interface surface.

Command Used :

Sketch, offset entities, Extrude Boss, Fillet, Revolved Boss, Swept Boss, Mirror, Project curve, Chamfer, Dome, Shell, Filled surface , Knit surface, Swept surface,

MIDDLE SEAT :

Middle seat was placed in the shaded area closely behind the superstructure back door. This middle seat is designed by using Solid modelling.

Command used :

Sketch, Offset entities, Extrude boss, Chamfer, Fillet, Mirror, Extrude cut.

REAR SEAT :

Rear seat was placed over the garage behind the super structure. It was designed after importing the desk surface of the hull as interface surface.

Command used :

Sketch, offset entities, Extrude Boss, Fillet, Revolved Boss, Swept Boss, Mirror, Project curve, Chamfer, Dome, Shell, Filled surface , Knit surface, Swept surface, Extend surface, Lofted surface, Mirror, Rulled surface.

ASSEMBLY DESIGN :

Assembled the parts of yacht using relation and standard mates (Coincident, Concentric, Distance mates).

Since we designing all of the parts respect to plane so no specific mates were required in such case.

RENDERING :

Rendering the model was done using photoview 360 in Solidworks.

CONCLUSION :

Thus the exterior parts of a Sunseeker Predator Yacht were designed , modelled and assembled using Solidworks 2018 and Photo realistic render using Solidworks 2018
