DOUBLE UNIVERSAL JOINT SIMULATION USING ANSYS WORKBENCH
A) TITLE:- Double universal joint simulation using ansys workbench 2019 V3.
B) OBJECTIVE :- To simulate the double universal joint motion for obesrving different parameters like equivalnet stress , equivalent strain etc.
C) MODELING :- The model consisting of driving shaft , driving side ball joint , connector , driven side ball joint and a driven shaft with a fixed spring is imported into the transient structrural analysis module of the ansys workbench.
D) ANALYSIS :-
1)All the parts except the driven shaft with spring are assigned with structural steel. The driven shaft along with spring is assigned with structrural steel for case-1 , stainless steel for case -2 and Titanium alloy for case-3.
2)As we are not interested into the contact stresses , pressure no contacts were cnsidered during simulation.
3) the most important part in this simulation is defining the joints.
i) The spring is made body-ground fixed.
ii) The driving and driven shafts are assigned with body-ground revolute joints.
iii) Four body-body revoulte joints are assigned at driving side. out of which 2 were assigned between driving shaft and driving side ball joint while the remaining 2 were assigned between drivin side ball joint and connector.
iv) similarly four more body-body revolute joints are assigned at driven side.
4)All the parts are assigned with 3 mm mesh size.
5)The analysis is carried out into 5 steps with large defelction on.
6)The driving shaft is given a rotation of 150 degrees.
7) the simulation is then carried out for different cases and the results obtained are summarized below:-
E) RESULTS :-
1) CASE 1 :- Material of driven shaft with spring - structural steel
1) CASE 2 :- Material of driven shaft with spring - stainless steel
1) CASE 3 :- Material of driven shaft with spring - titanium alloy
the results for all the cases are tabulated below :-
F) DISCUSSION :-
I) The equivalanet stress is minimum (772.77 MPa) for titanium alloy while it is maximum for structural steel ( 1572.1 MPa) . for structural steel and stainless steel the values are almost same.
II) The maximum deformation is same for all the three materials (38.63 mm) as in all the cases the degree of rotation is same.
III) the different properties of these three materials are :-
- If we consider the Young\'s modulus is very high for steel as compared to titanium alloy. The Youngs modulus indicates the resistance offered by material for elastic deformation. The more the Young\'s modulus the more stiff the material is and hence the stresses developed in steel are much more as that of the titanium alloy for same deformation.
- If we consider the FOS on yield strength basis then it can be celarly seen that it is higher for titanium alloy.
- so we can suggest Titanium alloy but if we consider the cost then titanium alloy is much more expensive than the steel and hence material should be selected according to the criticality of the componet/operation.
