Creating 1D elements like ROD BEAM BAR for the following component with the given cross section and DOFs

OBJECTIVE:

  • Creating 1D elements for the following component with given cross section and DOFs. Extract the Midsurface of the component and Create RBE2 Links, RBE3 Links, Rod Elements, Bar Elements, Beam Elements.

ROD ELEMENT: In brief, CROD elements support (allow) tension and compression only which means only translational DOF but in some softwares Rotational DOF are also used.

BEAM ELEMENTS AND BAR ELEMENTS: Simple beams with constant properties (symmetrical and constant cross-section), may be modeled with CBAR or CBEAM elements. However, what you need to recall is that in CBAR elements the origin of the element coordinate system is centered at the shear center of the crosssection (shear center and neutral axis coincide). Any offsets between the neutral axis and the shear center is not accounted for. As a consequence, CBAR elements are not useful for modeling beams that warp as it may be the case with open channel sections. This is because, the cross-sections of CBAR elements remain plane. In other words, whenever you are modeling open or nonsymmetrical sections be especially cautious with the element type you are going to use.

PROCEDURE:

  • Import the given component of IGES format in the Hypermesh
  • Extract the Mid-Surface of the model with the help of feature in Geometry Tab
  • Remove the Solids in the model.
  • Automesh the model with the specified Target Length
  • Create ROD, BEAM, BAR Elements.

a. Rod element:- with only translational DOF and RBE2 link

Cross-Section: BOX- Dimension a= 12 mm

dimension b=10 mm

Thickness t= 0.75 mm

  • After creation of RBE2 link with the help of Rods in 1D element feature tab create the Box cross section with Hyperbeam.
  • Then assign the cross sections to the Rod element in Feature tree.
  • Later update the CROD to get the required cross section.

b. Beam element:- with all DOF and RBE3 link

Cross-Section: I Section- Dimension a= 8 mm

Dimension b= 10 mm

Dimension c= 8.5 mm

Thickness t1= 0.75 mm

Thickness t2= .6 mm

Thickness t3= .6 mm

  • After creation of RBE3 link with the help of Rods in 1D element feature tab create the I cross section with Hyperbeam.
  • Then assign the cross sections to the Beam element in Feature tree.
  • Later update the CBEAM to get the required cross section.

c. Bar element:- with only x and y DOFs With RBE3 link

Cross-section: CROSS section- Dimension DIM1= 5 mm

Thickness DIM2= 1.2 mm

Dimension DIM3= 10 mm

Thickness DIM4= 1.2mm

  • After creation of RBE3 link with the help of Rods in 1D element feature tab create the Cross - cross section with Hyperbeam.
  • Then assign the cross sections to the Bar element in Feature tree.
  • Later update the CBAR to get the required cross section.

d. & e. apply the mass of magnitude 10 with RBE2 link

  • create a RBE2 link at the shown parts of the component.
  • Then assign the masses of magnitude 10 with the help of feature masses.

f. Join the two components with Spring elements

  • After creation of all the above features join with spring elements at the location F

RESULT AND CONCLUSION:

  • The following objectives and tasks had been accomplished
  • Meshing was done, Creation of RBE2, RBE3 Links had been done
  • Creation of CROD, CBEAM, CBAR with respective Cross-Sections had also been fulfilled.
  • To finalize the whole component - view with 1D Detailed element Representation, so that the cross sections of Rod, Beam, Bar are visible.
