Project

Create 1D elements

Objective: To -

  1. Create 1D elements on the following component with given cross-section and DOF
  2. a. Rod element: - with only translational DOF and RBE2 link

Cross-Section: BOX- Dimension a= 12 mm

Dimension b=10 mm

Thickness t= 0.75 mm

  1. Beam element: - with all DOF and RBE3 link

Cross-Section: I Section- Dimension a= 8 mm

Dimension b= 10 mm

Dimension c= 8.5 mm

Thickness t1= 0.75 mm

Thickness t2= .6 mm

Thickness t3= .6 mm

  1. Bar element: - with only x and y DOFs with RBE3 link

Cross-section: CROSS section- Dimension DIM1= 5 mm

Thickness DIM2= 1.2 mm

Dimension DIM3= 10 mm

Thickness DIM4= 1.2mm

  1. & e. apply the massof magnitude 10 with RBE2 link
  2. Join the two components with spring elements.

Procedure:

  1. Provided model was imported using import geometry.
  2. Mid surface was created using mid surface command.
  3. 2d mesh was created using automesh.
  4. Properties and material were created and assigned to the bracket.
  5. One pair of rbe2 elements link was created.
  6. Two pairs of rbe3 elements link were created.
  7. Rod was placed between the rbe2 links.
  8. I and cross beam was placed in rbe3 links.
  9. A mass of 10 was placed on rbe2 link.
  10. Rod, I and cross cross-section were designed using hyperbeam and optistruck under standard sections.
  11. Another rbe3 link pair was created for spring placement.
  12. Spring element was created on rbe3 links
  13. Three properties for each of the cross-section was created and assigned to their respected elements.
  14. 1D detailed element representation was turned on in order to view elements in 3D.

Result and conclusion:

  1. I learnt how to create 1D elements.
  2. I learnt how to create midsurface using different methods.
  3. Increasing the no of elements at the corners can help mesh trace the surface better.
