Project

Comparison of Bending of Beams

Aim :

The main aim of this project is to compare the performance of three types of beams under a bending load. The model of the beam is created based on the given sketches.

CASE 1 CASE 2 CASE 3

So, for the above beams, we need to compare the results of stress, displacement, and strain and suggest the best out of the three.

DESCRIPTION :

  • The model is generated based on the given sketches using SolidWorks. They are extruded for a length of 400mm.

Case 1(Rectangular Beam)

Case 2(I-Beam)

Case 3(C-Beam)

  • After the models are generated, a new static simulation study is defined for the models and the material of the beam is assigned as Alloy steel for all the three cases.
  • A load of 1500N is applied on the smaller face(i.e. 45mm face for case 1, 40mm face for case 2 and 45 mm face for case 3)
  • The mesh is created and the results are obtained for stress, strain, and displacement. Based on these results the beam performance is compared.

- The stress output result for the three cases is shown below,

CASE 1

CASE 2

CASE 3

  • The I-Beam has the least deformation when compared to other beams. The C-beam shows the maximum deformation due to the applied load.
  • When comparing the stress values, the rectangular beam tends to bear the maximum stress and the i-beam has the lowest stress value.

-The strain output results obtained are shown below

CASE 1

CASE 2

CASE 3

  • The I-Beam has the least change in dimension when compared to other beams.
  • The C-Beam has the maximum deformation when compared to the other beams for the same applied load.

-The displacement results obtained for the three cases are shown below

CASE 1

CASE 2

CASE 3

  • From the given result, it is clear that c-beam has the maximum displacement for the applied load of 1500N
  • The I-beam and the rectangular beam has less displacement when compared to the C-Beam.

RESULT:

Hence from the stress, strain, displacement output it is clear that the I-beam is best among the other two beams.
