Cleaning the topology and Meshing the TURBOCHARGER CAD model using ANSA

Objective :

  • To clean the given topology of Turbocharger CAD model using ANSA.
  • To name its different parts and assigning PID's.
  • To surface mesh and volume mesh the given topology.

Topology clean up :

The given Turbocharger CAD model is first checked for geometrical errors, the errors are shown below in Fig (1) and Fig (2).

Fig (1)

Fig (2)

  1. After the errors are found, the missing surfaces are matched and extra surfaces are deleted using Faces tool bar.
  2. Eliminating single cons and creating surfaces using Hot points.

Below figure shows the error free surface of the given model after eliminating all the errors,

Boundary conditions :

The imported Turbocharger CAD model has already been seperately named for each and every individual parts. Next it is renamed to our convenience and assigned with different colours to distinguish each other.

Meshing :

We use two different mesh types to completely mesh the turbocharger namely, Surface/Shell mesh and Volume mesh.

Surface/Shell mesh

Using Free mesh from the Surface mesh generation tool bar, the Turbocharger is surface/shell meshed. The different mesh sizes used for different parts are :-

  1. For blade stage 1 = 1mm.
  2. For blade stage 2 = 1mm.
  3. Shaft = 1mm.
  4. Turbo casing = 5mm.
  5. Turbo casing inlet and outlet = 5mm.
  6. Turbo inlet casing cover = 5mm.
  7. Impellar = 2mm.
  8. Impellar casing cover = 5mm.
  9. Implellar casing inlet and outlet = 5mm

Below is the image showing the Surface/Shell mesh,

Note : Impellar inlet casing is hidden to show the mesh generated upon inner parts of the Impellar.

Volume mesh

Before starting Volume meshing the topology is close completely to create the volume, then it is checked for Pre volume definition checks and Leak detection using Define tool bar under V-mesh. Using Unstructured Mesh tool bar, select tetra CFD (tetrahedral mesh used for CFD analysis) to create the volume mesh.

Below are the images showing the Volume mesh,

Conclusion :

  1. The given Turbocharger model was checked for surface errors and cleaned.
  2. Different PID's were assigned to various parts and they were named accordingly.
  3. The Turbocharger model was first Surface/Shell meshed using given mesh size for different parts.
  4. Finally, the Turbocharger model was Volume meshed.
